Since it uses a copywritten sample, I can't post this to Soundcloud or Bandcamp, lol. But I listened to "U Can't Touch This" last night after almost a decade or two of not hearing it, and I was like "DAMN, this would kick ass in a drill beat". 🤣 So yeah, enjoy, and happy holidays to you all.
Created in NS2.

Very nice beat, indeed!!!
Hammer-time!!!
You got his vibe in the bag, my friend.
Happy Holidays to you and your family!!!
Peace and Joy!
With love and respect,

@jwmmakerofmusic Nicely done. I really like this. I’ve been trying to use NS2 more. How do you go about using the audio samples and transition sounds. Do you load them into slate ? I’d love to know your workflow.
cool sample flip 👍🏼
Happy holidays to you and yours too my friend. God bless and much love! ❤️
Thanks mate. You've been making a lot of amazing beats too, though I don't always leave a comment. You're part of the inspiration for me to branch out further from Lofi HipHop into other genres of HipHop. I even have a friend who's a rapper interested in buying beats from me! 🔥 He said his jaw dropped when he heard my flip of "U Can't Touch This". Hello lucrative income. 💶
@Thepixelproducers I didn't forget you mate. My reply to you will be a far longer reply as I'll explain everything about what I did, so hold tight mate. Happy holidays to you meantime.
Yes, I do use Slate to trigger the audio samples in lieu of having audio tracks. I do wish we had audio tracks in NS2, but here's what I do.
First, I screen recorded a bit of the track from Spotify and loaded the video into Koala and chopped up the pieces I wanted to play back. Then I recorded myself triggering each sample one after the other into a "bits and bobs" audio file that I loaded into the "122322a" subfolder of my "Project Files" folder in NS2's audio library. Then I separated the three sounds in Slate to trigger back.
NOW, I could've used the stem split feature in Koala to separate out the sounds, but I didn't feel like going that deep with this sample flip.
The MC Hammer sample is very crisp and bright and very "in your face", so in order to tame the sample, I used FAC Transient to eliminate the punchiness so the drum samples I used could pop through the mix more efficiently. Then I "oldified" the MC Hammer sample with PCM2612 and RX950, EQed the sample, and voila. Now it fits in with the rest of the mix.
The piano is from Korg Module, and the strings are an Obsidian preset. The piano didn't need much EQing as it sounded fine as-is. Just a little Pitch Drift and a little high passing, and boom. The strings however were too bright, so I used RX950 and lowered the filter. I then further EQed them to dull the brightness until it fit the vibe. Of course I slapped Pitch Drift on the strings too, lol.
Most of the drums are from J Dilla's drum kit except the impact sound at the beginning which came from one of the "Sounds of KSHMR" packs. The record scratch came from "Sounds of KSHMR Vol 4". The "brass impact" is from "Sounds of KSHMR Vol 2" loaded into Obsidian's sampler. The 808 is a mix of a sinewave and triangle wave in Obsidian (the triangle being much lower in volume), fed into NS2's waveshaper to help make the 808 audible on even the crappierst speakers. I then mildly sidechained the 808 to the kick.
I routed the kicks, snares, hats, and 808 into their own buss and originally slapped on Knock, but for whatever reason Knock made the drums way too punchy even on a lower setting. (I absolutely love Knock, but I guess it depends on what drum samples I'm using in a given instance.) So I then loaded Beef and used that instead to enhance and glue the drums and 808. Flawless.
Then I laid out the arrangement by repeating the same 8-bar loop over and over, mixing it down into NS2's limiter to squash the mix just a little too much, then subtractively editing the arrangement until it had a proper flow to it.
Mastering was easy as I only used three plugins. First I removed NS2's limiter in order to apply MagicDeathEyeStereo for some light glue compression and removing frequencies under 20Hz, and then into NoLimits to bring the mix up to between -15 and -14 LuFS. "What's the third plugin?" Youlean's Loudness Meter. I currently swear by that plugin! (I honestly wish DDMF would release NoLimits 2 already as that has its own built-in LuFS meter whereas NoLimits 1 uses 🤮 RMS.)
Additional notes - ever since I dove into Lofi production and started mastering my tracks to -14LuFS and cut out BarkFilter Tripleband preset, my masters sound so much nicer and clean. I still stand by what I said earlier about EDM needing to be mastered to between -8LuFS and -7LuFS and needing crisp highs and nervous mids, but it's so bloody grating on the ears.
I actually did try to listen to EDM yesterday, and like the last time I tried to listen to EDM two weeks ago, after 30 seconds it spiked my anxiety DUE to the nervous mids, crisp highs, and slammed brickwall limiting. 😳 I never in my life thought I'd say this, but I am just done with overprocessed EDM for good.
I still need to release the "Mysterious Girl" single sometime in the new year (probably in January), but once I had tasted Lofi and HipHop production in general and have detoxed mental heathwise, that'll be my final EDM single.
HipHop in all of its forms, from Lofi, TripHop and other instrumental genres, to Trap and Drill, Boombap, Reggaeton, Old School, etc is absolutely far superior! In my own opinion, of course. Ymmv. I just like how I can lay back and listen to Lofi while kickin back, vaping nicotine and sipping whiskey on the rocks.
Well that's about it from me. Happy holidays to you and much love. Cheers mate. 🥃
