Help with mixing and making things sound the same across speakers
Hi y’all,
I attempted to mix this a little and it sounded pretty good in my new jabra headphones. Now it sounds sucky everywhere else….
I eq on each of the two channels where I have sounds….
What do you guys recommend? Keep tweaking things on an individual channel or route both to a master channel and mix there?
Thank you all!

What did it sound like before you started to EQ and what is it 'supposed' to sound like?
How well do you 'know' the headphones you're mixing with?
Do they over emphasize certain frequencies?
It does feel like you cut a LOT of the high frequencies on the beat or was the intention to make it sound somewhat muffled and boxy?!
These things can easily happen when the headphones high end is overhyped or cutting down the bass because it's too heavy on the headphones.
When you have an EQ on every track I would never solo a track and do EQ on it but rather listen to the whole while tweaking.
TB Morhpit has support for some Jabra headphones, don't know if yours are on the list?

If they are then you could definitely benefit from using TB Morphit on the master buss when mixing (but remove it when exporting or creating a video).
Good Luck!
Mixing is about balance. With 2 tracks I would just work them separately eq wise, but keep them both active so you can hear what the change is doing. Do you need EQ at all? Just adding and tweaking EQ can sometimes just make things worse.
Without knowing the context of what you are attempting it’s difficult to know if you are close to what you are aiming for.
It does appear that you might have slightly overcooked something on the track on the left. It sounds like the track on the right with the delays seems to be OK, but there is a dominant mid range sound on channel one that might need some attention. You might be able to hit that with a multi band compressor, but if you can get into the original track I would be inclined to rework the balance of that track a little more.
If you can …. have a listen through the iPad speakers at low volume and that will give you some good perspective on where things are sitting while you are tweaking things.
Just a thought.
Honestly, without knowing what you were trying to do, I don't think this sounds all that bad. It's got a real lofi trip hop kind of vibe to it. Would be nice to have some more high end on one of those parts to give it a bit more air, but I don't hate the way it sounds now either.
The biggest thing that jumps out at me is that there's kind of a hole in the center of the mix and everything feels pushed out to the sides mainly. I can't tell if it's panning or some weird phase issue, but I think having something centered in the mix more would help pull it all together on different speakers.
Hi @magnusovi ,
@Tarekith 's comments is quite interesting.
I am not very good at mixing, but I tend to agree with Tarekith!!!
Great work.
Happy New Year 2023!!!

It’s hard to convey how incredible you guys are. Thank you so much for the tips, and comments!
I just worked a bit on it just now and it sounds 100 times better.
Fudge man! It’s close to what I had in mind and I can see some of my issues. I was going for something that was sorta lofi in the sampled melody, but ethereal and droneish on the sounds from steel guitar. Lastly I wanted the 808 to bump hard, with not too much vibration but sorta creating the space where everything else would be inside.
What I did is sample 30 seconds of Chet Baker’s “Almost Blue” and made Two different Melodie’s. For one of them I resampled my original melody off of my iPad speaker and now I can hear the different volume on that section and slightly blurry sound…. Arghhh
Anyways. Thank you all again!
Thank you sir! And happy new year to you as well!
Before I EQ’ed it it was very cloudy and the 808 was killing everything else. I knew even less than what I know now, lol, so I purchased the eq app to try to make things sound clearer and without any knowledge of frequency’s or what anything meant I just played it by ear. Then I read about compression coming after the eq so I added Medusa.
The whole entire time I was eq’ing with the headphones, and after about 30 minutes of repeated listen I thought it sound clearer. I think my brain was numb after hearing the same 1 minute loop 30+ times.
The tip of listening to it with iPad speakers at low volume was invaluable to me! Thanks man
Man…. I wish I saved what the hell I did with the EQ app to show you the insanity that was going on… but oh boy you were right about a black hole in the middle… thank you!!!
I mix down to sound good in my Toyota Corolla
Hey Paulie, what do you mean mix down?
I have a really good pair of Sony headphones and I use them to get a decent (in my opinion) nice balanced final mix. Then I use MagicDeathEye Stereo on the master to even it all out. I view the end result in Audioshare. I like a nice jagged edge that approaches -2db. No flat spots. That seems to sound good in my car. Happy New Year!
One way to get a consistent mix across platforms (or sound systems or whatever) is to put an eq on your stereo buss filtering everything below 250hz and everything above 4khz - this way you’re only hearing the midrange which is the only part of your track that everyone will hear regardless of what they’re listening on. Once you get everything in this range sounding nice, open the filters again.
The tip of listening to it with iPad speakers at low volume was invaluable to me! Thanks man
Cool. It’s sounding a lot more solid now. 👍
I don't see this mentioned enough on this forum.
Get a pair of studio monitors and treat your room. For headphones, also get proper reference headphones. This is not as expensive as it once was.
iPad pro stereo speakers are quite flat, but for any lower frequency below 100 Hz, you will not hear it properly.
You can find some cheap acoustic foam online which will be better than nothing. Some good cheap monitor choices are: JBL LSR 305, even cheaper the Presonus Eris 3.5, but again, the latter will lack in lower frequencies. For headphones go with Beyerdinamic DT770 or Audio Technica M50x.
You will also need an audio interface for everything to connect, these come in all varieties and prices as low as 30 USD/EUR.
