I wouldn't call this melancholy, rather more reflective or emotive. There is a chord change right at 2:38 that gives me a chill. I could write a book about your title. Beautiful composition, Colin!

This reminds me a lot of a song by Japan off their 1979 album Quiet Life, a song called Despair. Do you know it? Very emotive indeed.

Thank you @GeoTony and @Sandstorm - can't say I recall the song Despair but I do have the album (not heard it for years!) so just had a listen and, yes, I hear a very similar vibe. I could so easily have added a Geo SWAM Sax and it would have sounded even more similar
