Drum app(s) and filters for ambient textures

I'm wondering about drum app(s) and filters for ambient textures to layer in the background of ambient pieces.

I've never really explored drum apps,so don't know where to begin.

I'm not looking to create beats and rhythms, just textures. I'll use them and stretch them, layering them with field recordings and instrument layers.

Where to begin with this? What developers should i look at, what drum apps, and what filters would serve me best?

My genres for this project are meditative ambient, and ambient drone.

  • Fractal Bits might be worth a look on the drum app front.

  • I haven't used it, but sounds like you might get some use out of this patch. Please report if you do:)

First recommendation is Skiiid. totally unusual
    https://apps.apple.com/app/skiiid/id1516634571

    From the description
SKIIID is a new drum-synthesizer with 4 expressive pads and the possibility to morph between them. With its randomisation feature you can create unique effects and lo-fi drum-sounds quickly. On top of that we’ve added a fun sequencer. But don’t expect a highly accurate clockwork drum-machine, this synth is “dirty and alive"

If you don't have the need for AUv3, I highly recommend Drumlab
    https://apps.apple.com/app/drumlab/id1523182272

    or DM2 (Drumlab's older/previous sibling) https://apps.apple.com/app/dm2-the-drum-machine/id1490236959

both have oscilators, noise and effects with automation and if not enough, any drum part could be a drone part.

Last, but not least, Seakbeats (also non AUv3) and it's older sibling, the free Tweakybeat
    https://apps.apple.com/app/seekbeats-drum-machine-synth/id681672176

    https://apps.apple.com/app/tweakybeat/id330051410

  • Videos to showcase (in order)

    2x Skiiid

    DrumLab

    DM2

    2x Seekbeats and Tweakybeat

  • Thanks @FordTimeLord, I once bought it, but never clicked with drums. Time to redownload and dust it off.

  • @andowrites regards filters/FX are you looking for ones that will create a rhythmic effect specifically (since you mention drums)?

I guess I'm thinking more glitchers, texturisers, modulators, over an initial series of drum beats/textures.

I could also be exploring percussive apps, as well as drums. So it could include Ting from Klevgränd, but also Slammer, or one or two of Bram Bos's apps. But I am not in the know about drum and percussion apps at all, so hopefully someone could help point me to a simple solution.

Wow, somehow missed your reply. I shall explore.

  • I just realised that I have Patterning. That might be helpful in this process?

Any drum apps that offer random sequencing?

Hmm ok. I suspect Turnado would suit your needs very well. Granularization in particular is well worth exploring - Bleass Granulizer is great as is Spacecraft. Audio Damage QuatroMod and Discord4 worth a look too. lfo controlled parameter movement can keep things evolving and therefore interesting in all cases. For glitching beats Replicant2

I'm liking the look, sounds, and function of Seekbeats.

I have DM2 and Skiiid already, found them tucked away. I'm loving the Drone Mode of Skiiid. I could make great use of that. I didn't realise it had that.

Abso-freakin-lutely! Besides the ability to generate long sustained notes at slow speeds, you have dozens (hundreds?) of free kits of all kinds, from the percussive to the flowing and beyond. You can easily create your own kits or use it as a MIDI sequencer for other apps. I understand Patterning 3 is in the works.

    Patterning 2!

Poly 2, Gestrument Pro = while not solely drum apps, can def help in the glitchy, plucky, skittery/textured department.

You said you already have Patterning 2, there’s a boat load of user made kits to download.

Loadker can get weird and glitchy

Elastic Drums has a randomize samples and sequences function

    Octachron has a smart randomizer

    Perc Synth

    Different Drummer

    Borsta/Skaka

Glitchy or granular fx: Scatterbrain, perforator, Koshiba, Looperator/effectrix, turnado, Glitchcore, otherdesertcities, silo, Beatcutter, SpaceFields,

  • Velvet Machine and PaulXStretch are good effects for ambient.

Anyone able to make a sense out of this one? I suppose it takes your incoming audio and replaces parts of it with other textures that you have loaded into 9 flexi samplers, but I'm not able to make it output sound consistently. I wish complex user patches always came with a video demonstration of its intended use.

  • Would definitely recommend Fractal Bits and Skiiid.

Seekbeats with that randomizer can be loads of fun. It's IAA only, but for me still worth it

And good find on your hidden library...
    DM2 and Skiiid are awesome
Both can be great for the textures coming from percussions and have those lovely drones

    Oooh
Forgot one... Elastic Drums (and just noticed @taeo mentioned it lol)

(worth checking the other videos on oliver's channel)

For percussion Decent Sampler and piano book are your friend

    Lots of texture stuff too

  • Yeah, a sampler might be the way to go, using weird samples cut up smaller with modulation varying start and end points, and some weird fx chains, maybe some granular fx as others have mentioned

  • Also consider using Needlepoint as a sound source. And my Magic Delay vid showed its great potential for glitch percussion. Loadker +Magic Delay would be a great simple combo. Look at Euclidean Sequencer maybe too, also Strokes

    I guess it's this one

  • No mention of Sugar Bytes Drum Computer ?

  • That’s the one. This is a great drum sequencer, but I’m still unsure whether gate length can be changed, so far seems not, which makes it not ideal for melodic stuff. I think for ambient stuff, sqsl Temp is a great choice for both melody and drums / percussion, despite the lack of sync, presets etc. These are not a huge deal if you set everything up right and are happy with doing all sequencing within the app, screen recording and then extracting audio to a host / daw 😂. Far from ideal but it makes beautiful noises if you feed it the right sounds, and has a lovely workflow once things are set up right. It’s just the setting up every time that’s a pain in the proverbial.

My top rec is free! Download Noise. The download gives you two apps. The Noise Drum app is excellent for weird ambient grooves. It even has a playable filter-type effect (press a drum button and drag). The only caveat is that the best ambient drums in Noise require an IAP and no one knows if this app will be supported after having been recently sold.

I made a good track with this but cannot find it in my AudioShare. I did find a track I don’t even remember making that seems to be using Noise Drums for some ambient percussion:

Crystalline by Brother Thomas and the Eternal Cosmic Truth Orchestra
  • I would say, just experiment. Take something like Fractal Bits, witch can generate some percussive sounds, control it with a sequencer (In this case i used, funny enough, a bass sequencer). Add some filters (a resonator and a reverb) and maybe a glitch effect (Replicant2).
There are many ways to experiment, and a good way to have some fun :)

You just keep tempting me about sqsl Temp @Gavinski!
