AKAI MPK mini plus with iPad Pro great combo

  • The build quality is pretty good too

  • Looks really cool to have those extra keys. It also doesn't look like it takes up too much space. I just got the Akai MPK mini play not too long ago, but I wanted that for sampling/jamming. This looks like a neat option if I ever get a GAS attack lol

Been eyeing this one, what’s your verdict after a year using it with iOS?

  • Threw mine against a wall lately out of frustration with the horrible keys and totally inconsistent velocities.

  • @jo92346 did it work?

    yes, instant frustration relief.

So… crap warning on this despite its advertised functions?

Anyone else want to share their home improvement tips using the AKAI MPK Mini Plus as a tool?😁

@thesoundtestroom Maybe this thread should be moved to the hardware category?

people here are saying new velocity numbers make a difference (with the non plus)

  • Yep. I did that.
Still sucked. Maybe was a lemon, but I doubt it. Tried some other small keyboards since and they all sucked to some extent whatever the price range. Therefore I gave up trying to find a small keyboard to fit my carry on. Better off buying or renting a good 88 keys wherever I am.

So… did the AKAI suck ”more” to your liking than any other small keyboards, or could it be that you’re simply not into small keyboards at all? That is of course totally fine, but does it ”color” your view regarding the AKAI?

I have a Novation Launchkey mini mk3 and for my needs it works, but of course it differs from a weighted premium full size 88- key controller. I mostly just use the iPad anyway without a controller on the couch, lacking a proper studio space. I just want 37 mini keys instead of 25, to quickly hook up and give me more flexibility when entering longer or more intricate passages into my iPad DAW. Sometimes I just want or need the tactile feel of keys instead of glass.

the Akai I had definitely had the most inconsistent velocities: had the edit manually ALL the velocities in logic or nanostudio. The other keyboards I tried at the store, don't remember the models, ranged from 99 to 399, the best was in my opinion the one with semi weighted keys, but it was really too big to fit in my carry on. I was hoping for something with mini keys.

Thanks man, I guess that rules out the AKAI. Take care!

  • The CME XKeys is pretty good. I really like mine, although if I bought it again I’d get the 37-key version

I tried all the options I could find of 37 key mini controllers and nearly all were flawed… either dreadful keybeds, horrible velocity implementation, or flaky mini usb connectors.
I ended up paying more for a Reface CP, which has a great keybed and well implemented velocity. Does miss out on many controller functions - no mod wheel, pitch bend or drum pads- but with local off is great for my needs. And has very nice sounds, batteries, midi, aux in, speakers, sustain pedal, etc.,
Other Reface models provide different options for cc control - the sliders and pitch bend on the CS might work well for synth tweaking…
Anyway, just something different to throw in the mix…

Have you looked into the m-audio oxygen mini? I think it’s only 32 keys but it gets good reviews and has more of the features all the more expensive controllers have.

    That's a good idea - 20.87" - tight for a carry-on I presume?

  • Thanks for all the input, got some thinking to do now!

  • I have an MPK Mini, not the plus model, but it also had awful velocity response. Worse still some of the keys stopped responding at all.

The (temporary) fix is to open it up and clean all the contacts on the rubber keypad with isopropyl alcohol. It now works better — My dead keys now work again — but not perfect. I don’t expect it to be too long before the procedure needs repeating though.

When the AKAI gets defenestrated, the little Arturia would be top of my list to replace it.

I do still have a Novation XioSynth though, so that gets used more. It is about 20 years old and even when new had terrible reviews about the build quality. The keys feel pretty bad to be honest, springy and spongy. But they work great. And it’s a class compliant, battery or USB powered, audio and midi interface too. And it has a built in synth. Which Novation were capable of making 20 years ago.

Mine is battle scarred from gigging, is missing a knob or two and has a big hole in the case. But still works perfectly.

It’s 20 years old and I can plug it in with one USB-C lead and then plug by headphones into the keyboard and record audio through it too. And nobody makes anything like it today. Maybe IK, but that thing has proprietary connector so they can Feck off. lol.

Novation. If you’re listening. Put a class compliant audio interface and at least one of the Circuit’s synths into a 25 key launch key and watch me whip out my credit card!

OR. Out class compliant audio interface into the Circuit Tracks. That would be my perfect iPad controller.

  • When I had a mini keys thing for travel purposes, etc., it was an Arturia Keystep 37.

Worked fine for my needs. YMMV, and so forth. Keys not great, but useable (IMO).
