Question about iOS Security (I received a txt by a scammer)

edited January 2023 in Other

I received a txt mess to let me know that someone sent me $2000. A random stranger.

Obviously a scam, but I was curious to know how the scam works so I clicked on the link (it's always good to know how the scam work to have less chance in the future to get caught).

As expected, it's a link to a fake website to let you choose your bank.

I did not click further, but I'm sure that, you select your bank, a second fake website will appear, you enter your bank infos and you will have to log in into a fake account and the scammer will got your infos.

Now my question: a friend of mine told me that it's possible sometimes that some link will install an app on your iPhone to scan your infos and sent it to the scammer. These kind of apps works like ghost app that you do not see.

Is he right or wrong? Is it possible? I did not agree to install anything, but I'm a little bit paranoid.

On the Apple website FAQ, you can read that all apps must be on the AppleStore so you cannot install 3rd party app (like a spyware or malware).

I wonder if I should reset my iOS.

What are your thoughts?

Thanks

iOS security holes are very rare, and Apple does a good job at quickly communicating them and issuing iOS updates.

It’s unlikely that you have had anything install that can send personal data to others, but you could try googling the nature of the scam to put your mind at rest.

  • Our iPhones can be hacked by Pegasus without us clicking on anything.
I wouldn’t worry much about it. That software is very very expensive and mostly used by oppressive governments to keep tabs on political enemies and investigative journalists.

Don't worry about it. There are no known vulnerabilities at present where someone could install anything on your iPhone or gain access to any personal info just by clicking a link.

However that was dumb, dumb, dumb to click on the link. Don't do that!

If there was a zero-day vulnerability, your phone could have been compromised. That is highly unlikely but has happened. But, what you did possibly do was confirm to the scammers that you're a sucker and confirm to them that your phone number is a valuable one to try again in the future. If the link had meta data in it that they could tie back to your phone number, then they now have a link between a gullible victim and a phone number. Such numbers can be sold for a good price, increasing your chance of getting more scam texts or worse.

I wouldn't worry about it. There was probably no tie back to your phone number in the link that you clicked. They were probably just going for the chance that you'd be duped into entering a password or something. Still, thinking you're smarter than a hacker is just asking to be proven wrong some day.

  • i laughed at scammers because they usually some guy or girl from India who tries to sounds American 😂 which it seems impossible for them because their accents always gives them alway no matter how hard they try not to sound like the 7/11 quick mark indian or Hindu, but basically they already gave up on trying to scam me because when they call my phone trying to scam my personal info, i made them wait on the phone for 15 mins just playing with their minds and waisting their time, and when they're thinking they got me, i end up saying why would i give and indian or Hindu or anybody with your accent my personal info which they end up getting mad trying to insult me i and up laughing at them and insulting them back with their own accent and making fun of the their accents which make them more bad and makes me laugh its just fun, for which they stop calling my phone, but i really miss waisting their time and making fun of them and calling them names 😂 which its not about being races because im definitely not, but they are a bunch of scammers which i like making fun of them for trying to scam me 😂

i recommend to never keep any personal info in your phone or any device that connects to the internet, not your real name, or anything that represents something like a social security number which in some other country maybe different or its call something else, anyway no credit card num, no important passwords, no important emails, no address info, no bills info, no job info always keep any pesonal info some where that doesn't have any internet connection, keep always your important personal information separate from any device that you use to connect to the internet and never used your real personal info to sign in anywhere on the internet always have an alias and with a made up birthday for the internet, and never connected your alias info with your real personal info, which is the best way to stay connected to the net, that is how i always do since i started using the internet 23 years ago

It is a fascinating thing to study. It used to be a part of my job. It would have been more fun if I didn't have to try to explain to angry executives how it's impossible to prevent people from trying and what a waste of time it is to report it to law enforcement.

You don't think you're racist, but let's pick a few choice phrases from your first reply to point out the obvious, shall we?

i laughed at scammers because they usually some guy or girl from India who tries to sounds American 😂 which it seems impossible for them because their accents always gives them alway no matter how hard they try not to sound like the 7/11 quick mark indian or Hindu

"7/11 quick mart Indian or Hindu"? You do realise that your spouting a stereotype and not an "innocent observation"? You do realise laughing at someone for "trying to sound American" is bigoted at the very least?

i and up laughing at them and insulting them back with their own accent and making fun of the their accents which make them more bad and makes me laugh its just fun

You do realise mocking someone's accent is pretty racist? It would be better to learn a few choice insults in the Hindi language.

Then again, instead of stooping to racism and ignorance and insults, how's about simply hanging up the phone, blocking the number, and not wasting your time and energy on any scammer when that time can be better spent making music? Life's too short to waste on mocking scammers.

EDIT: I point all this out to you so that you won't be banned. I love listening to your music. Be humble mate and simply apologise. Cheers.

It might be worth noting that the language or ethnicity of the persons calling is in no way connected to the origin of the scam or other campaign.

Call-center labor is inexpensive in India. Legitimate and illegitimate businesses outsource to firms in low cost regions to reduce expenses. For all anyone knows, the origin of the campaign could be anywhere - Russia, Arkansas USA, China, ...

Also worth noting - the person actually making the call is just a person trying to make a living, probably working long hours, and for very little pay. They're not the ones causing the annoyance in your life, but the firm behind it.

I try to be respectful of the person calling. I try to interrupt at the first opportunity and explain that I'm sorry but I don't accept any solicitations over the phone and (most importantly) "can you please remove me from your call list".

Now robocalls are another matter. Those are just plain evil.

  • I am not a robo racist though.

This is why I removed my voice mail box on my phone.

This thread is about scammers describing the perpetrators of those scams isn’t a thought crime yet.

i laughed at scammers because they usually some guy or girl from India who tries to sounds American 😂 which it seems impossible for them because their accents always gives them alway no matter how hard they try not to sound like the 7/11 quick mark indian or Hindu, but basically they already gave up on trying to scam me because when they call my phone trying to scam my personal info, i made them wait on the phone for 15 mins just playing with their minds and waisting their time, and when they're thinking they got me, i end up saying why would i give and indian or Hindu or anybody with your accent my personal info which they end up getting mad trying to insult me i and up laughing at them and insulting them back with their own accent and making fun of the their accents which make them more bad and makes me laugh its just fun, for which they stop calling my phone, but i really miss waisting their time and making fun of them and calling them names 😂 which its not about being races because im definitely not, but they are a bunch of scammers which i like making fun of them for trying to scam me 😂

Scamming isn't about race, it's definitely not, but your post is all about race, and is definitely racist.

my comment its not raíces, because all im saying is that 98% of the people who has tried to scam me through a phone calls for over 5 yeats has been indian or Hindu, so why is that raices or got to do with being raices when its the truth, im just talking about my experience with scammers and what i did to make them understand that they can't scam me, plus making fun of the accent was to make them bad for trying to scam me, i have an accent too when i talk english, but anyway im definitely not a racist, never was never been and never will be a racist because thats not my nature and never will be my nature, the problem with you is that you can't comprehend the comment or the the message i wrote which doesn't give you the right to judge who i am because you definitely don't know who i am

All of that sounds racist to me. Not to mention your assumptions about the religion of scammers.

assumptions about religion 😂 bro do you know how to read ? yes i understand my english its bad and it sucks because im Puerto Rican and spanish is my main language, but where in the comments im talking about a religion you must be blind or you can't read or simply when you are reading you not comprehending the point of the comments🤷🏻, because how did you assume im talking about religion 🤦🏻 plus where in the comments im being racist 🤔 both of you are some funny guys, you two definitely should become best friends, because ya seems alike, but anyway i already say that im not racist because im definitely not even if you think so from your assumption, which got to do from you not being able to comprehend what i was talking about, but anyway your miss understanding didn't bother me, because at the end of the day what matters to me its that i know who i am and what im not, and as long that me and my self know who i am and what im not it’s what counts and matters to me, you think i do care what you and the other one thinks about me ? well no !
the reason i do answer back to you and the other guy was to let you two know, that what you two are assuming is the wrong thing, but if you can understand that, well its all good i ain't mad atcha, you can have your opinion which at the of the day it doesn't matter to me, because thats not the case of my nature, plus at the end of the day you ain't nothing to me but some words with some wrong assumption about me and my personal view of life, so just keep assuming whatever you want if that makes you happy, because i will keep going on my road happily ever after with no problems, because i definitely know who i am !

You can double-down as much as you like, but you should give consideration that two people have now pointed out your racist attitude. Some self-evaluation wouldn’t go amiss here.

Make that three people. "Indian or Hindu" are not even alternatives of each other, especially when mocking someone's accent. One is a nationality, the other a religion. It sounds a bit confused tbh.

As a side note, a bonus tip about accents: whenever you hear someone speak a language with a non-native accent, it means they speak at least one other language, too (and in the case of Indian people, it tends to be more than one). Not that bad, really - although this fact is sometimes lost on monoglots.

I believe they were mocking the rubbish US accent they were trying to portray.

  • Well from what i remember, a link could point to a website that installs a new signing certificate that would allow to install 3rd party iOS software. If the user can be tricked into confirming this, I see no reason why it couldn't be done.
