Can audiobus let me do this?

I am new to iOS music, and love it so far. I bought a Striso which I play hours a day (aiming for 10,000 hours and fluency!) and use MusixPro, ThumbJam, Roli 5D, and GeoShred, with a few of the extra price instruments. My goal here is to keep the Striso on my right (treble, in accordion terms) with whatever of the above instruments I have chosen, while setting up something else for the left, which I want to control with the iPad itself. For example, I can make MusixPro play astonishlingly simple major and minor chord triads, and use any ThumbJam voice. But I want to use different app and instruments with Striso, simultaneously. Currently, I can use two iPads and a simple mixer to do what I describe, but the only recording is of the combination "audio out."

Any suggestions?

Thanks!

David

  • Yes, probably. It will let you route the different MIDI streams to different apps, using their virtual MIDI ports. You'll be able to do it all on one iPad. It looks like you've mostly chosen stand-alone apps, not AUv3, which makes routing audio somewhat trickier. If they support IAA (Inter-App Audio) or Audiobus specifically, you'll be able to route and mix the audio. Also, you can only run one instance of a stand-alone app, so you won't be able to use Thumbjam for both voices. You should just get Audiobus and try it out.

However, you should also consider AUM, which continues to be updated. It has similar functionality, plus more general audio and MIDI routing. It includes built-in recording for any channel, including the master mix output.

  • Thanks, @uncledave ! I obviously need to do some more homework, but am encouraged by your reply. Since I don't know a thing about AUv3 or IAA, there's some looking up I'll do. And, if I can only use ThumbJam for one voice, that's probably OK.....I can use it fed by MusixPro, with the touch screen, and then use Striso to drive anything in GeoShred, if that works. What a world is opening up.

So what are your impressions of the Striso Board now that you have been playing it for several months? What are its strengths and weaknesses? Are you still using the Xkey too? Is it difficult to use two different keyboard layouts?
