[Alchemy] Can/Should I use iFunbox to put new samples in: Library:Private Documents:Alchemy: Samples

I've been using iFunbox to add presets to Alchemy with some success:

Disclaimer: I'm talking about third party presets like this:

http://patcharena.com/93-new-presets-for-camel-audio-alchemy-orion-nebula-soundset/

  1. I put them here: Library:Private Documents:Alchemy: Presets

  2. Organizing them is a pain. Usually free samples come in one flat file structure. I need to organize them into subfolders, or they won't play.

  3. Some patches won't play. Why is this? A: Will some patches only play in desktop Alchemy? Should AAZ and ACP files go in the same place?

  4. I'm thinking I should be putting samples in this folder: Library:Private Documents:Alchemy: Samples, but I don't see samples that come with the presets I download

Comments

  • It's pretty safe to add samples to that folder, but the reason we say it's "unsupported" is that it's also easy to mess things up by deleting or moving files.

Most Alchemy presets contain references to samples or AAZ files. If a sample is not in the correct folder Alchemy may not be able to use it. When this happens the preset will fail to load.

There is also the problem of the iOS file system being Case Sensitive - it may not affect the presets you are installing, but it's something to be aware of. If a single character is the wrong case there will be a problem e.g. file.wav and FILE.wav can exist together in the same folder.

The hard part that you're dealing with is putting the samples in the right location. Unfortunately there is no easy way to do that other than checking the preset file references and moving the samples manually.

  • Sidebar related to @zenpunkhippy's comment. iOS' case sensitivity extends to file extensions as well. So mysound.wav and mysound.WAV are not the same file at all.

There are quite a few iOS apps that allow you to manually edit fairly simple text files to make instruments pointing to collections of samples if you're so inclined (Nanostudio TRG, BM2, Thumbjam, Drum Perfect...) but it's very easy to miss a case and some editors and sample pack downloads default to foobar.WAV.

  • Wow, guys thanks for the info.

I guess the only fatal error is accidentally deleting a critical file? Then what, delete, and reinstall?

  • It really depends on which files were accidentally deleted or moved.

If something was deleted from "Samples/Guitar Mutations/..." then you would be pretty safe to just delete Guitar Mutations and re-install it.

The "Factory" sub-folder is a bit more difficult because samples in this folder are shared between different sound library presets.

"Libraries" contains the files critical to all of Alchemy, so if you were to mess that up then yeah - full re-install is the way to go.

FWIW I've managed to get in to a situations during testing where the only solution is full delete / re-install, but it's quite rare as long you're careful.

To delete a sound library to enable re-downloding, swipe it left on the sound library list and hit "Delete". The "Download" button will be visible again when you open the sound lib.

Does this feature actually clear space on the iPad, or just removes it from the list?

  • It only removes the presets folder, not the samples (that would be quite complicated because samples are shared between sound libs).

No biggie, but it's good to know when experimenting with soundbanks on the iPad.
