Transposing a sequence

Hi

I'm looking for a simple app that can help me to transpose an
1) a programmed in sequence with rests or
2) a played sequence from an external keyboard also with rests

and that I can store this sequence and use it again another time.

I was reading about the Alesis Micron and there is a functionality that allows one to record a sequence, store it and play it back on a different pitch /scale.

Arpbud2 and polystep looks great. I don't own it yet but wondering if it can be use for my purpose.
It is like the step sequencer in the Keystep but with transpose function and saving function plus a little more 'less rudimentary'.

Comments

  • Brambos Rozeta Scaler can transpose pitch, key or both on the fly

  • Agree, Rozeta Scaler is the easiest and simplest, unless you have a specific complicated demand. Plus you get a bunch of other great apps with it. It’s a ridiculous bargain.

  • They would still need a way to program or record, and store the sequence.
    Rozeta suite won’t help there.

yes, rozeta scaler is more like playing it live and having it transposed.

    Maybe I wasn't clear, I'll try again,

    1) Either
    a) I play in a sequence on keyboard (say in C) and it gets recorded as a phrase or
    b) I add in notes on a piano roll
    2) then with this 'phrase' I play a C on the keyboard and it will play back as it is,
    3) i play E on the keyboard and it play the phrase transposed in E.
    and so on.
    4) I can save the phrase and recall it when I need it again.

    Is this possible with Atom2?

There are a couple other too.. I think Scaler 2…

I think, what you are actually looking for is a thingy like a

    “phrase arpeggiator”.

Or Phrase sequencer, there is no exact term for such.

yes phrase sequencer sounds more appropriate. Looking at most of the Ios apps, like quantum sequencer, setting up the sequence then hitting transpose kind of is the same thing, but then again not exactly, plus it's limited to 16 steps (from what I see in utube videos)

Reading the Alesis Micron manual, this is what it says.

So I was wondering if this is already done in ios. The cool thing with the Micron is that you can save the pattern or sequence and have it play back with 1 key and with transposition. It would be interesting for performance but also for studio use as well.

These are unfortunately extremely rare. On all platforms by the way.

Cubase has one onboard . Also Logic Pro X.
For iOS I do not know even one, that would fit that caliber.

The big thing with such is always the browser for selection and management of the patterns.
And it actually should support dragging and dropping phrases straight in and (possibly also) out of the machine.

Such tool is essential for production of electronic music.

Another good tool is Re-Phrase for desktop computers. It uses a slightly different and unique approach of loading entire MIDI file into it and distributes this automatically to slices across the entire keyboard. Although it does not transpose. But other interesting techniques of phrase constructing are possible with this. For instance scrambling the harmonies of a Bach composition into something completely new.

Yes you got an interesting point there. With re-phrase, I think the MPC One looper can do that, sampling a long phrase and cutting it up and triggering it in different segments to create new melodies.

You should look for Arpeggiators, which can load MIDI phrases.

    yes I'll look around again.

In fact, in hardware it's possible on the behringer TD3. I just got one and it allows one to transpose a sequence / pattern to a different pitch. Keystep has the 64 steps sequence possibility but doesn't allow transposition.

Trance and House and Chillout Engine. Although, these tools generate
    1. a chord progression and then
    2. a set of 300+= fitting patterns for bas, melody sequences and so on

It is more something for generating genre based construction kits.

p.s.: Their generative pro tools are very good (chord potion and sundog)
but do not allow to import midi phrases. but export.
Both of these tools use a combination of chord progression and polymetric arpeggiators to generate really interesting
phrases for all kind of electronic music styles.

Yes something along those lines. I guess I'll continue my search, maybe integrate the TD sequence pattern into my setup, transpose and let it trigger ios app or external hardware.

  • What I'm using in a similar scenario is Imaginando LK with each clip in the Matrix mapped to a different MIDI note. Clips (=phrases) can be launched with any quantization like 1/16, 1/4 or per bar.
Although I don't know if LK can transpose a single clip by playing a different note, I rather create multiple clips with different transpositions and little variations so it doesn't sound like a plain transposition.
LK also supports random melody or chord creation within a scale so that's already a pretty capable playground.

  • Someone mentioned Sunriser to me and it worked! Now got to figure out how to get midi out?? :D
