Slightly off beat recording issues

edited January 2023 in General App Discussion

So here’s the thing: I load Apematrix inside Garageband and record a track, lets say a rhythm. When I record the exact same rhythm on a second track the beat is recorded slightly off beat. I can manually drag the waveform to position it right, but that’s kind of silly and a pain in Garageband on iOS. I have exactly the same issues when using Paul’s multitrack recorder inside Apematrix. No matter if I choose ‘host sync’ or ‘remote’ it never records perfect spot-on. And to be honest, Paul’s app is very coarse for editing so that’s why I need a DAW. Anyway, an annoying problem I just can’t seem to get rid off as all tracks I record seem not completely 100% synced.

  • ..and here a screenshot of 2 identical track recordings in GB, but off beat. I open Apematrix in GB, I go back to Apematrix where the GB recording icon has appeared on top of the screen, I hit record, metronome does a countdown and recording begins, after recording this is the result in GB, off beat compared to the first track.

  • Could it be that ApeMatrix being IAA and all doesn't really work that well for these types of duties?

I don't even know if ApeMatrix supports any kind sample-accurate syncing method and GarageBand lives a life of it's own working at 44.1k sample-rate even on 48k only devices just for starters which can get pretty interesting when it comes to sync.

One idea would be to use ApeMatrix's built-in recorder and export the audio to GarageBand...

You could be right about that.
And using Apematrix build in recorder is not an option either, it’s primitive as I can’t arm it, when I hit the record button it starts recording immediately and has no influence on start/stop

What apps are you using with ApeMatrix? AUM might work better but is no guarantee when it comes to GarageBand but even in stand-alone AUM is quite good at recording loops of each track individually if needed.

Even though I do like GarageBand it really does need an update to modernize it a bit...

I use Korg Gadget in Apematrix, it sequences the synths I load in Ape and I like to use the rhythm part of Gadget, so it has become a Gadget/Apematrix fusion, Gadget synced with Apematrix. But maybe I might be better off with changing from Ape to AUM. I don’t mind about Garageband, it’s free sitting on my iPad and I tried to make it work as Audio Evolution Mobile did not work out at all with Apematrix, errors each time I tried to load it. And Gadget is not even recognized. The dev told me that IAA might give difficulties, so no bad word about AEM. I tried it. Considering a different workflow is not always easy when you’re kind of used to the same routine, but I know something needs to change if I want to move forward :)

  • Quick question about AUM: do I need to buy Audioshare if I want to export recorded audio, or does it just save in a folder on my iPad?

You don't need AudioShare you can export from the File menu in AUM.
(I don't have AudioShare installed at all).

AUM has a folder in 'Files.app' but it doesn't currently show the recorded audio files, only project files.
But you can easily export from AUM. Hamburger menu -> files and long-tap on the object you wish to share/copy elsewhere.

Great, noted. Will buy AUM this week and hope I can make some progress.
