Need help trying to record Animoog Z in Xequence 2

So I want to record and playback the MPE data of multiple instances of Animoog Z with Xequence 2 and I have Animoog z loaded in AUM and MPE enabled in Xequence and I’ve been trying to get all the channels connected and it’s just not working, there’s too many options to troubleshoot and I can’t find a specific tutorial. Has anyone done this and can point me in the right direction? Thank you

  • Well I kind of got it working. The issue is I can’t seem to get Xequence to send the midi back to only one specified instance of Animoog Z. It will record it from anywhere and then play it back to all of them. Is it not possible to have Xequence sending MPE to 3 different Animoog instances independently?

  • Hey.

Yes, it is in theory possible to use up to 4 MPE-capable synths from Xequence via AUM, but ItIsComplicated™ due to limitations in MPE / MIDI, and also because Animoog Z apparently doesn't support MPE "zones" (normally, you can split up a MIDI connection (16 channels) into two MPE "zones" so that for example each zone has 8 channels and you can control two devices over a single connection. But Animoog Z doesn't support this).

So, your limit is indeed two instances of Animoog Z.

First, you have to enable Xequence's Virtual MIDI Source which will give you an additional MIDI connection to AUM:

Then, set up two instruments in Xequence, one pointing to "AUM", another to "Xequence Source":

Then in AUM, select "AUM Destination" and "Xequence Source", respectively, for your two Animoog Z instances, and don't use the channel filter at all:

    Hope this helps!

@SevenSystems thank you that did indeed help and I got it working with two instances! One thing though is in AUM I had to set the midi outputs both to AUM source, while the inputs were as you described. So AUM destination and Xequence source for inputs respectively, but the outputs in AUM are both AUM source. If it wasn’t set to AUM source, nothing got recorded. But hey it works, just thought that was interesting

  • Yes, recording from both Animoogs simultaneously wouldn't work anyway, as Xequence's Multitrack Recording (currently) doesn't support MPE. It is possible using the same strategy as for inputs to route both Animoogs separately into Xequence, but Xequence won't be able to deal with it anyway yet.

Well yeah I’d be recording one at a time, just need one to be playing back while overdubbing with the other
