Sending stop/start messages to AUM from Ableton live?

Hi all,

Has anyone managed to get start/stop messages sent from Ableton live to aum? I can't seem to get my head around it.

I'm currently using a iConnectivity Audio4c together with my iPad and Windows desktop and would love to just start any sequences on AUM from Ableton Live.

Any help would be much appreciated!

I think Link is the solution, and you have to disable midi clock sending. I don't do music on desktop but from what I know there should be no crossplatform's problems.

  • Aum doesn't receive midi clock but Link should work fine. Someone who does desktop music (I don't mostly) in combo with their ipad should be able to confirm, or correct me if I'm wrong.

  • Thanks for the swift reply, guys. I managed to get AUM to send stop-start messages to Ableton which is still useful for me but have noticed a very noticeable drift in the midi clock between them both, any idea as to the best way to get a real accurate clock? I haven't tried link yet but do you think Ableton link provides a more accurate clock?

I have a USB multi-clock lying around and was wondering whether this would be useful in this case, but seeing as AUM doesn't receive a midi clock, maybe not?

    Try link and report back!

  • Windows user here, live plus ipad, ableton link is the way

  • Link with iPad and computer connected by Ethernet with Bome Network utility running on both is rock solid.

You’re correct, I use Ableton and you can’t receive mmc or mtc time code in AUM, that’s the only weakness with AUM for me personally, but I just get the feeling it will never be added to AUM, it’s like ever app HAS to have a weak spot and for some reason even though people want something the developer either can’t or won’t add it.

  • Jonatan, AUM dev, spoke recently here about his willingness to add it, but also the difficulty in implementing it. It's in the pipeline, and if added, would be great

  • Link is the best. Solves all syncing issues between apps and devices.

Live to AUM should be as solid as midi clock. MIDI Clock isn’t inherently better in terms of stability.

AUM has Link offset too which means you can get spot on syncing with Ableton even when you monitor audio from AUM into Ableton if you are using through Audio.

depending on your audio card settings it usually 7-16ms offset.

  • Link is far better than MIDI clock.

  • Brilliant, Ableton link is working almost perfectly! my only problem at this point is I cannot work out how to get live and AUM to both start on the downbeat, it seems like AUM starts 1 or 2 beats later than Ableton. I have messed around with latency adjustment but still can't get it right. Any ideas?

Unlike midi clock, Ableton Link starts on measure boundaries when start/stop is used. When you start link and use the start/stop option option, the connected devices should start at the beginning of the next measure. If all of them are stopped, they should start together on the one of the the next measure after you press start…including Live.

I don’t recall if there is a setting in Live that changes whether it starts immediately or on the next sync quantum.

  • Don't use midi clock, use Link :)

Not sure if this affects Link, but the AUM on-screen Play/Pause control is just that. When you Play after Pausing, it resumes on the beat after it paused. Rewind is required to reset to the beginning. You could see if AUM works differently when you rewind before starting.
