So, I met the Developer of Music Putty directly to learn about the app, subscription, and more

Yeah, no joke. Found out about the app last week and ended up meeting him in person yesterday. I shared my experiences using the app, and we discussed about the future of iOS.

So, I met the developer of a Melodyne/Auto-tune Type App on iOS (MusicPutty) | Season 4, Ep 13

Key points
1. How the app was made
2. Skills learmed
3. Challenges in developing an app
4. Why a subscription model instead of…

  • Yeah,...

    Really good interview.

    Nicely done.

  • Thanks for having me! It was a pleasure chatting with you.

Seonn is a very talented musician who does a lot of cool stuff on iOS. Check him out if you haven't done it before!

Only the WorkingCopy / LoopyPro model works - if you don't have an App that just everyone direly needs.

There's not been a single paid LoopyPro update yet so it'll be interesting to see how many will grab it when it drops or decide to stay with what they've got?

Would be cool to see some stats on how many have actually bought an additional year of support since it's been out for over one year already?! (But since there's been no 'feature updates' there's no rush to pay for an additional year of support since bug-fixes will be included anyway).

It'll also get pretty 'interesting' if a bug is caused by a feature that the user has not yet paid for....

  • Well said, Gravitas is a genius but more than that he is humble, kind, thoughtful and generous.

    32 Euro per year 😅😅😅

    Sorry

For a vocalist like me who does a lot of vocal editing, $30/year for a Melodyne alternative is worth it. Especially when the dev has been pushing out a ton of feature updates. If you don't do a lot of vocal editing, then it probably won't make sense.

  • A year ago I thought a subscription for a simple Melodyne clone was ridiculous. Now? @AutumnRock has proven himself as a reliable dev who regularly updates the app, fulfilling the promise of why folks should subscribe.

I'm not a vocalist (I'm way out of practice as a singer), so I usually use CB3 for "quick and dirty" tuning rather than deep editing.

Yes, subscriptions are always (mostly) OK for those who have a constant need for an App, understandable.

For me, this is just a sad thing as it removes some sort of Apps from my reach.

I think a lot of apps need some sort of hybrid of subscription and credit usage to appeal to a wider range of users. The Waves online mastering service uses purchased credits to complete each job for instance, so if you don't subscribe to the service full time, you can just purchase credits for the occasional usage. That makes it so that heavy users can subscribe for value and the service is still accessible for more sporadic users. Using some form of in-app credits to one-shot enable functionality might enable developers to expand their users without impacting full subscribers - probably really complex to implement though 🤔

  • “For a paid app priced around $10 to be continuously worked on, it would require around at least 10k+ new paid users per year. In reality, most niche apps can only hit a small fraction of that number. With subscriptions, the rules have changed. Now, an app can be financially viable as long as there's a small group of people who really want it. With a few thousand supporters, an app like MusicPutty can be maintained and updated indefinitely...”

Target $100K per year requires 3,333 yearly subscribers. How many are subscribing to Music Putty currently? What happens if there are not enough subscribers?

There are many apps in the art/photo category that are subscription based, but there seems a wider market there. What market research was done on the size of the IOS music creators? How many of us are there? How many iOS singers/producers are there? Is the goal of 3,333 subscribers per year acheivable and sustainable? $30 per year seems like a bargain if one is actually making money with music. How many iOS musicians, esp. singers, are making money with music? Is there any way to have a poll about this on the ABF??

  • @Slam_Cut

How many are subscribing to Music Putty currently? What happens if there are not enough subscribers?

I doubt many devs would share their internal numbers, but judging by the constant feature updates MusicPutty is receiving, I suspect they are probably doing just fine.

  • @Slam_Cut : a voluntary poll would not provide meaningful data. It would give you a subset of unknown composition of those people that bothered to look at the post. Such polls only tell you about the people who chose to participate with no way of knowing if they represent a meaningful subset [and almost certainly it won’t… those few ABF forum members making meaningful income from music may be the least likely to participate…they’ve got music to make].
