PD Space Guitar - A run through some presets

Space Guitar by Paul Driessen is one of the best guitar synths I have ever played. The sustain is amazing! Here is a run through some of the presets to give an indication of the types of sound you can get out of the box.
This synth is programmable too, of course!

It is quite a long video (lots of presets!) so if you get to the end - well done! :)

Thanks for a great app @Paul_Driessen

I already have and the results were not great. YMMV. This app works so well because Paul is a master guitarist and he has fine tuned every feature to work for guitarists. And it does that extremely well. Best guitar synth and FX unit by a mile, IMHO.

  • Is this better than Roxsyn?

I've had very little luck with Roxsyn--I get mostly mud when I try to use it. PD Space Guitar is bright and full and rich--and it responds amazingly well to dynamics if you set it up right. @AlterEgo_UK did a great job running through the presets (there are actually even more in the app but he hit the majority of the important ones) but he didn't cover the envelope features that totally transform PD Space Guitar into a monster. You get three separate controls, which can be controlled via MIDI or through the envelopes. The latter is amazing. You can even invert the envelope. There's also a knob to control the bass octaver by note range--fantastically useful. It's my favorite guitar tool in a long, long time--probably since MIDI Guitar 2 hit.

Yes, there are a few more presets but the video was already getting a bit long 😉
Also, as @lukesleepwalker said, there is quite a bit of very useful configuration available in the app to fine tune things and give an even greater variety of sounds.
I think the main purpose of this app, as the name suggests, is to provide spacey guitar synth sounds and it does that extremely well. The sustain is much better than Roxsyn or Midi Guitar 2 (although the latter can match it with some types of patch).

As one of the commenters on my video said, guitarists don’t always want their guitars to sound like guitars and for that other apps such as Mid Guitar 2 can provide yet more variety, especially with the IAPs that allow midi out and the use of external AUV3 apps.

I had great fun today revisiting Midi Guitar 2 and intend to make a video about using that with a variety of AUV3 apps which definitely don’t sound like guitars 😀

The two apps (PD space guitar and MG2) are absolutely perfect together.

Did you use an autotune effect in front of it too?

No, that would certainly help but would help with any harmonizer?

  • edited January 2023

Yeah, harmonizer for chords, autotune for pitch stability. The new Vocaltune Pro is great for tuning. For harmony, maybe Qvox

Edit: I may have misunderstood based on your usage of the word harmonizer

Seems that if the app is already detecting midi, a midi input harmonizer might work better than an audio input harmonizer.

  • Thanks for a great app @Paul_Driessen

You're welcome! Thanks for your great vid!
I've been working hard the last few weeks, so please pardon my slow response ;)

    About harmonising:
SG doesn't detect midi, but "knows" about any harmonic in the spectrum, where ofcourse the root frequency of your guitarstring is harmonic number 1. It doesn't check where the strings/notes are however, all partials are treated equally: SG does not know which frequency is root or harmonic.
That way it can be more responsive, there is no guessing what is played.
Voice harmonisers mostly track the root note of the sung note, and have a bit cleaner harmonisation results because of this, but are mono.
You can play mutliple notes at once in the SG harmoniser, but in a practical sense, playing 2 notes at once is the max for a normal brain to process, because those 2 notes turn into 4 notes, and they'll have a "stacked harmonic" structure.
When you play the tonic in C major in Cmajor harmonisation mode, you can get the 3rd or 5th as harmony.
    Now if you play C and G you get (3rd harm): C plus E, G plus B. A 4-part chord, a C major 7…
I kept the harmoniser system simple for now, it is however tweakable by remote control, so you can flip the harmony note to 1 to skip the harmonising while playing.

One job that takes a lot of my development time is to NOT add features: there are so many possibilities, and one could try adding them all, but the chance a guitarplayer would find the right usage for those knobs diminishes with every added knob.
So I skip all deadend stuff, sacrify small things for the greater good. But I have to determine whether somethin is deadend or not, and that takes time everytime such an option pops up in the process.

The coming beta is hopefully the last and will feature some cool new stuff and some improvements.

  • uploaded, waiting for apple's review.
    PD Space Guitar 1.3.42 BETA
    =======================

The first 10 factory presets offer a glimpse from what is new and possible, from preset 10 upward, most presets have been altered to use the stereo system, mostly QUATRO.
Please mind that the official release will have way more new presets, but I’m still working on it.
There is a lot of new stuff, allthough the number of knobs hasn’t increased.

    SHAPER

    • smoother frequency & filter tracking for the hx modes,

      • faster attack and decay for the low frequencies in all modes

    AMP

    • the amp master level is gone. Use the slider to the right instead!
    • all waveshaping is now oversampled
    • FILTER: the old sweep filter now is a full unit, with its own ENV/CC or autofilter. So it can do wahwah and autowah. The filter now also has a Lowpass and Highpass mode.
    • SQUEEL: a new waveshaper that can add a bit of bite and lots of intermodulation…. or make it sound like you’re blowing up amps somewhere in a cellar. The amount of Squeel is remotable!
    • ATTACK: a normal mono attack knob: stop the sound and then play: there will be an intro ramp. works nicely to make both shaper and guitar sound more unisone smooth. The amount of attack is remotable!
    • TONE: will now rollof the grain of the overdrive at 6dB per octave, but the normal guitar trebles at 3dB per octave. This way you can get the grain better where you want it.

Please add your email adress when you found a bug or send a screenshot. It is nice to be able to talk to you! ,;)

Was on the beta and it’s a great app! Don’t have the extra funds to buy right now but it’s on my list.

  • Bought this today to run on my Ipad with a Darkglass Microtubes Infinity as audio interface. Easily the best software guitar synth I’ve tried!

  • edited August 18

May be of limited interest here, but this is now available for Windows and Mac OS - half price until end of August (£23.99 in UK)

  • FYI:
The windows version comes as a vst3 folder, which
means you put a folder with vst3 extension in your normal vst3 location.
Unzip the download and place the resulting "PD Space Guitar.vst3" folder inside
    c:/ Program Files/ Common files / vst3

  • Does it work with geoshred ?

    Or midi apps with strings.

Is it a physical model synth of guitars/ for modeling guitar sounds ?

It is a guitar effect, so it wants audio input. If you use geoshred with a clean guitar like output, it will also work ofcourse, but I don't know if that is so amusing

    Thanks.

    No worries.

    Seems a good app though.
