Since this is specifically for iPhone, I would add that, while useable, OB-Xd's UI is not ideal at that size

Yeah I was wondering about that, although I saw that had been addressed in an update according to version history . Didn’t know if that was true or not!

Some of the glaring issues have definitely been solved, but I still find it exceedingly small, and scrolling up and down is not great; I would prefer a tabbed interface with larger controls

How bad is it? I’m trying to find a screenshot online but just seeing stuff from a few years ago

Quick videos on an iPhone 13, no sound, just showing the UI and scrolling. Let me know if they work for you: https://1drv.ms/u/s!AgwLqSQbHzqYhMcQaAK53fXrmjY_HQ?e=8Nz9Fw

    How much is the IAP?

The "BB Synthwave" IAP for Zeeon (US$10) is $3.

Yeah literally have $11 in my account …I’m restricted to base model stuff for a few weeks lol

Ok not quite as bad as I feared…is it worse in AU though ? (Will be using it in GarageBand)

I think that GarageBand has a fullscreen option for AUs, I'm not sure. I should've probably showed you AUM with the keyboard enabled, unless you're planning on using an external MIDI keyboard.

  • Zeeon is only about 10$ and is extremely versatile. Here’s a link to a demo of some patches I created a while back.

  • I even hate the scrolling of the OB X on the iPad, and I have an 11’ screen, just saying. There’s enough space on the GUI to make it more efficiently.

Yeah I don’t currently own a midi keyboard. Hopefully in a few months that will change!

    First off Welcome @Fear2Stop

There are no technical issues with OB, some people just don’t like the way you select a preset. However I personally don’t find it that bad. Sure it’s not the best at actually selecting the preset you want to use, it can scroll fast and easily get away from you, but holding down helps. To make it easier to select a preset just hold your finger down, and move it slowly until you hover over the one you want then release.

It partially depends on what types of sounds you want. I have both, but I personally like OB-xD more. I use it a lot more, especially for pads, but also everything else. It has a nice warm/smooth analogue sound, where as poison is better at edgy, sharp type sounds. Don’t get me wrong I like poison, but OB is more my style for sound. They are both lightweight, both are synths to have in your arsenal, but They are 2 Different synths. You could get one, and wait for a sale to get the other at maybe half price.

There are dozens or free banks for OB-xD available online. It uses the same presets file type as the desktop version. It’s comes with a lot, and there are a lot available online too.

Zeeon as recommended above is also another great well rounded option with lots of banks out there. Honestly, if I were you I’d have all 3 on my wishlist, it would just be a matter of what order you get them in… cheers!

  • I missed the iPhone part. Maybe Zeeon would top my list, it’s very versatile and scales well on any size device.

OB is still great, will definitely work, and provide great sounds, I’d still highly recommend it, but the UI Will require a little more scrolling to navigate. If your in it more for the presets then making your own, this won’t be as much of an issue since you just scroll one time to the bottom and you’re good. But if you want to design sounds, OB will start to be a hassle on an iPhone.

Thank you! I'm eventually going to get all three...I'm using Trooper to make my own sounds so in this case larger amount of "better" (all subjective) presets is what will sway the case for me (as long as I can tweak them of course!), and also trying to get as many different kinds of synths as possible eventually, just so I have more of a sonic playground to play in, so to speak. Been watching the hell out of The Sound Room channel on all three to get a better idea.

That’s the DAW I use 😎 I’m just tired of the current instruments and need some new sounds.

  • What are the closest equivalents for hardware versions for Zeeon and Poison? Like OB XD is obviously Oberheim based , but what are the closest in you all’s opinions for the other two?

I’ve seen Poison compared to the Roland JP-8000. Zeeon is kind of its own thing.

Nice… that helps out a LOT, as the order I get them will be based on the songs we have lined up. Think I might need to study Zeeon a bit more now… YouTube here we come lol

Nu-Trix compared Zeeon to the Jv 208o and JD 800 …hmm…that gives me another thing to consider

Imo, Zeeon is the most versatile of the virtual analog synths around and sounds great.

Right on @Fear2Stop ya know… Tropper isn’t the same, but I‘d say it’s in the same ballpark as Poison-202, at least sound wise. They are both versatile synths, but lean toward an edgier sound, if that makes sense. I can’t think of the word, not necessarily cold, but buzzy I guess, or something like that, lol.

I just pulled it up on my iPhone 13 Pro, and it rescaled rather nice. OB’s UI is laid out more vertically than other synths. OB is a synth where I mostly just use presets, with some minor tweaking if needed.

    Ob on iPhone 13 Pro

  • edited January 2023

both are good synths.. Poison 202 reminds me Roland System-1 (not just with UI/possibilities but also by sound), OBXd is decent emulation of real analog synth, with great sound too..

makes sense to own both - they do not competite, they both cover different sound spectrums at large part

Thank you….that’s way better than I was thinking…I have the exact same phone too. I’m starting to lean there especially with the large amount of presets. Since I can only afford to get one right now that might seal the deal. I’m gonna see how I feel in the morning and go for there.

I will have eventually get all three but gotta prioritize.

Aggressive? That's the word I'd use...although Trooper sounds a bit more clinical compared to Poison.

  • OBXD sounds more “analog” and has that 80s feel for sure but I prefer Poison. It’s more versatile and more up my street, though it veers towards house music more than the other.

I would say the complete opposite XD I find poison 202 too clean and linear, Trooper is very... wild and non linear

  • Hello,
I am from the old school and for me the obvious choice is OB-Xd. There are of course a few things to improve, but I've gotten used to them. The UI is very similar to the original and the handling is super-analog. The added 24dB/oct filter makes it more versatile and I have no need for Minimoog. On the track I supplemented it with Chorus and Delay. For company I gave a TAL-U-NO and this set up is enough for me (playing live, non-production).
    Cheers.

I couldn't have expressed my opinion on Trooper so brilliantly!
    Cheers

  • Yea those terms are not an exact science. Lol.

@Fear2Stop the first photo was in landscape and the second was in portrait mode. Not sure why the size is so different, but you could open this thread on your phone and literally scale the images to fit your screen by zooming in/out to make the picture fit. That would give you a much better idea of how it will look on your device.

As I mentioned earlier all are great options. Some synths I like to do a lot more sound design than others. I don’t do too much sound design with OB-xD, you could, but for me it’s one of the synths that have so many presets I usually find something I like, or close enough with some minor tweaks.

Whatever synth you decide to get search the forum for free presets. All 3 have free banks available in this forum.
