Virtual Drums AU?
Is it true that there is no acoustic virtual drums AU, like EZ Drummer or Addictive Drums vsts? How come? highly needed, ready to pay! Only could find one in gadget, but thats not an option, so are iaa ones.
Comments
Yes, it is true.
Why? Most likely it's not seen as a profitable opportunity for any iOS developer. Margins are so low on iOS that justifying the lengthy development time/cost is challenging.
Besides GarageBand's drummer, the closest we have are the Lumbeat apps and DrumPerfect Pro. It seems that even porting those apps to AUv3 either doesn't seem profitable to those developers - or they just don't want to. It's possible one or the other might be working on AUv3, but I don't recall reading anything to that effect.
Although it's a pain, it's not the end of the world to work with IAA when there's no other choice. BTW, GarageBand's drummer is excellent. Exporting tracks from there is another possible way to go.
Well… Not really. There are some single hit acoustic drum kit presets available in several of the Au apps, but are that great. As far as I know, none come with multisampled presets or multi-velocity sampled acoustic kits to give them a great sound. DrumJam is great but IAA, developer might be working on an AU version the pad portion, You mentioned a couple, as well as the “”Drummer apps, Jazz Drummer, Reggae Drummer, but all IAA.
You can make them in a few apps if you have the samples (there’s lots of free and inexpensive velocity layered drum samples out there) but even Digistix 2 has a maximum of 5 velocity layers, which is decent but not like having 10-12 different hits of every articulation. Audiolayer could be a Decent option but you will either need the samples, or a SFZ/EXS24 preset, these are also available free or paid.
I assumed from the OP that you're looking for something with some intelligence to follow song dynamics and create fills, etc.. But reading back now, maybe that's not what you're after.
If all you're looking for is an AUv3 that can host multi-sampled realistic drum samples, DigiStix 2 and AudioLayer are good candidates. DigiStix 2 is the easier to work with and has a sequencer with probability, but is limited to five layers. AudioLayer can build highly detailed kits, and can import some multisample instrument types (not without struggles sometimes though).
There are other choices, but those are the two I find with the most potential for realism due to multi-layer support.
Assuming you have finger drumming or MIDI programming in mind, you could use any app that allows mapping of samples to pads, of which there are a few AUv3 options.
This topic has been often discussed. Good news! THERE IS an acoustic virtual drum Auv3, with multi out ( 16 instruments ) very easy to use in any Auv3 host like AUM, Cubasis, Audiobus, etc...
And it is free.
That said two things are important to know:
1- it come as a free add-on with DrumPerfect Pro.
1- all the editing need to be done in the main app DrumPerfect Pro. ( to ensure that the Auv3 player keep simple to use and not bloated with dozens of commands )
Good to know also that all songs saved in DPP ( from user and from IAP packs ) will automatically appear as presets in DPP player ( Auv3 ).
By the way nothing stop users to load/open the main app ( IAA ) in one track and DPP player instances in other tracks. That way you can edit your song/ pattern in full screen view, save it, switch to the Auv3, and immediately have it available/updated in the player presets.
With iOS 16 and Stage Manager it is a delight to switch from DPP main app to Auv3 in AUM or Cubasis.

@Gilbert is correct
DrumPerfectPro is your go to for well articulated acoustic drums
Thanks, just checked. Seems like a pain to use as auv3. Regular sampler is dull, always an option of course but not as interesting. Tried digistix 2 and other 4P app - no sorry, that dev is not for me. I hope for Yonac, some drums would be great to accompany steel guitar pro.
Yep, the drum department is very much lacking on iOS.
-Audiolayer has plenty of layers and articulations but no multi outs and either you stick with the imported kit or good luck building your own…
- DigiStix 2 would all boxes (I’m happy with just 3 layers per kit piece) but the UI is cluttered, not intuitive, sample naming is weird. Could be great BUT. I just don’t enjoy it.
- Drambo is a beast. It’s what I usually use for drum kits, but it takes a lot of effort to build a proper kit, with choking, etc.. also you can’t decouple midi info from kits if you want each kit piece on its own track, which I do for sequencing,
- Sitala has the best browser and superb interface. Just very well laid out. But no multi samples…
- The Drum instrument in Zenbeats has one of the best sequencer integrations, multi out, powerful, but again no multi samples…
Pay a real drummer. Record with microphone…
Are we back on this again? GarageBand has drums. LOTS of drums and percussion. The desktop version of their Drummer software is more capable, but the iOS version is pretty good compared to all of the competition. And the best part? You already own GarageBand if you have an iOS or macOS device/computer.
What I have done in the past is building my track drums with Cubasis provided drum midi patterns. Then I triggered Beathawk multi layer drums in auv3 format.
