What is this instrument? (Polyphia cover)

She is incredible. I'm sure it's really hard to play without frets.

  • The video title calls it a Guzheng which is a fairly generic name for a plucked instrument. This looks like a pretty custom one to me. She is way more talented than her video producer. The video really didn't need all of whatever that was.

  • Yep it's a guzheng. In China that is definitely not a generic term for plucked instruments. But yes, this is a guzheng, and beautifully played

It’s pretty obvious it’s a direct homage to the video style in the GOAT video. There’s VFX all in polyphia’s/Tim’s vidz. I thought it made the hits more impactful

  • It must be a grumbly middle aged man thing I've got then. I can watch pianists play virtuosically without crash zooms and split screens etc... and she is good enough not to need any of that nonsense either :-)

  • bending, damping strings, and she is... so fast :#

  • I don't know if words can describe that level of virtuosity. Genius? Just beyond amazing.

I personally prefer this version to the original. Though Tim Henson virtuosity is undeniable and he managed to blend many playing styles (especially math rock) to create his unique touch, I am always having a hard time listening to him playing because of his tendency to add too much modulation effects to his guitar sound which very quickly bothers me, which is a shame because his playing is truly astounding. A player like Yvette Young has a barer sound and delivers similar amazing performances without any kind of sound artifice which is something I clearly prefer. In any case all these musicians are brilliant. The guzheng works better for me than Henson's guitar sounds and is visually impressive. Wondering how this would sound on a Japanese Koto...
