Roli Lumi Keys Pro MPE Controller/ a little like Osmose?
$299 a connectable element. Opinions?
Comments
I have 2 of these, wouldn't recommend.
To answer your question, even without considering above, this does not come close to what Osmose offers. Not to mention the continuum engines, MIDI 2.0, build quality..
If you still want it, I'll sell you both of mine at a very discounted price
Wow. This is going to be a short thread. 🙂
Lumi keys always reminds me of this insane musician -

I think there will be a lot of cheaper midi 2.0 keyboards coming 2023/2024 that will offer much better value than the osmose. Saying that, if money was no object i buy a osmose.
Still got 'em? I may be interested. HMU!
Roli suck ass... Would not buy from them again, their customer service sucks and my experience with the seaboard blocks has been too buggy
Short version, I had a Lumi, and sold it, don't do it to yourself.
I still have two remaining Lightpad blocks that I'll keep for historical artifact reasons only. And like with other people's comments, yeah I had a ton of problems and needing replacements, but actually support was fine in that they did replace each time.
Pure speculation but I would not be surprised if Roli ceases to exist in a few years.
I know it's not a keyboard, and I know I'm sort of obsessed, but get a Linnstrument, they're great
Edit: Oh I only just realized this is old, sorry Linear, you didn't need this info at all it seems!
Very possible they will go bankrupt again, yes. And yeah, I’d love a Linnstrument but can’t really afford one at the moment. Roger Linn is a boss!
Yeah, I had to do it second hand, and that was still a stretch at the time. Reverb dot com. someone sold me a 200 for 800 pounds, and after I was settled in to using it I needed another one for redundancy and got a 128 but nothing listed was cheaper than 800 pounds all over again and it had to come from the US. seems there's more linnstrument buyers in the US. For the most part I don't need a 200 I now realize, and with it set not in the commonly espoused layout of up in 5 semitones, but up in 6 (it works better in up in 6! i swear), i still get almost 5 octaves on the 128 (58 notes), versus 5 and a half octaves on the 200 (67 notes). it can be a lot of money to spend, relative to life obviously, it turned out to not be a lot for what it is / what i get out of it, i'm glad i did, in the same way that i'm glad i discovered ios music making.
Roli is a very weird company. Where does the cash come from? They roll out products as if they were Korg or Roland one week and then the next week all of a sudden they’re crowdfunding their next product like a tiny startup.
I had the blocks though and to be honest they were really good. Relative to other controllers the build quality was exceptional. Except they were lacking a few crucial parameters mainly relating to the scaling of the sensitivity on the pads - it can’t have been that hard to implement some control over tha? All the numbers were in the top 10% of the pressure it seemed so you had to really press hard to get the result you wanted, which is a shame if you’re trying to deftly bang in that boom bap beat replete with the necessary SP404 ‘springy fingers’ posturing.
But on the real, buyer beware with this stuff. They seem as though they have effectively been through a very effectively managed restructuring which is surely because the venture capital that they attracted ran out and there were only about 70 people actually using them.
On the other hand the software was pretty good and the bundled sounds were decent - I made sure to rip them using Sononym (pro-tip - it sees files the other ones don’t… I’ll leave it at that) before I transferred the license. And the license transfer was very easy and very smooth.
The sad thing to me is that the Lumi comes so close to what I want. Two octave modules with narrow keys that can (relatively) seamlessly be combined to create a larger keyboard or broken apart for portability.
I don’t want any of the gimmicks unless they can be done without significant trade-offs or expense. I don’t even need aftertouch or MPE features. Just make it solid and as affordable as possible, and I’ll buy at least three.
