The Best Website Host for Music in 2023

I'm sure this topic has come up before, but I'm looking to build a website. I'm looking for...

-Unlimited Storage for Audio Files
-To be able to utilise a mailing list for when I release new EPs, singles, beats, etc.

I know there are many hosts out there including Bandzoogle and Squarespace, but I'm wondering what your recommendation(s) are. Any help is greatly appreciated.

I think unlimited to storage space is going to be hard to find, can’t think of any options for that unless you’re paying a few hundred a month for it. Thought about rolling your own site in something like Wordpress? Lots of options for mailing lists and it’s not too hard to do these days.

Hmmm, if I roll my own in Wordpress, would I have to know how to code a website? I'm pretty intelligent when it comes to music but a complete novice when it comes to html, lol.

  • It’s pretty drag and drop these days, but I’d say maybe check out a few how to get started with Wordpress YouTube videos to see if it’s something you want to try first. No coding, but all the management, updating, and such is definitely a small learning curve.

Will do. :) I'm ready to put in the work (or at least watch some Youtube), even if it means I don't end up using Wordpress afterall, lol.

This article has some information regarding WordPress music sites. He mentions bunny.net with unbelievably low cost per gig; highly recommended. He also mentions Presto Player, also popular but fairly pricey and not needed, bunny.net has a plain-jane player (don't know about mp3 or wav). Presto can be subscription or lifetime license. So, you'd create a WordPress site hosted by any web host you choose, and link to your videos and/or audio files at bunny.net. The author also mentions that WordPress is used by 40 something percent of all websites; he doesn't mention that many Fortune 500 companies use it. Even though it's free, it's quality.

That's awesome! Tomorrow morning I will check out the article. ☺️

  • The default audio player that comes with Wordpress isn’t too bad either. I would HIGHLY recommend sticking with the stock Wordpress themes, especially to start. There’s a lot of fancy third party ones, but if they stop supporting them you’re potentially screwed by one Wordpress update. Happened to me a few times over the years, nothing like having your site not working all of a sudden.

I’d also recommend limiting your use of third party WP plug ins too for the same reason. Along with potential security concerns.

  • I built websites for a living for many years since 1995. From raw HTML and CSS to WordPress and Squarespace, and all the flavours in between.

I only build my own sites on Squarespace these days. I'm building my own music site on the http://persona.co platform at the moment, as an experiment. If i don't get on with it, I'll switch it to Squarespace. I discovered Persona.co through a musician's personal website.

I would recommend Squarespace or Wix for your site, for more reasons than I can list here.

A friend built his pro music site on Wix. Check it out at http://59perlen.com to see how he uses it.

WordPress looks and sounds cheap and easy, but it's neither. The costs mount up, and the platform is not secure, and without tech support. You need hosting, plugins, you name it. I used it for my sites and client sites for many years.

Just putting my two cents worth in the pot. I hope it's helpful.

I agree with all of this too, besides what I already said.

  • There's a good comparison between Wix and Squarespace here, specifically for musicians websites.

Wix comes out on top for musician friendly features.

After reading this article, I'm definitely going with Wix. It's the best for selling music and beats and such. :)

Great stuff. I'm glad it was helpful! I look forward to seeing how your project progresses.

I know nothing about promoting my music and even less about beats making. Personally I would start trying to sell on one of those beats selling site. It's a easy way to dip your toes in the water without too much hassle. Maybe you can add a text file to the download that invite them to register to your mailing list and site.

As a unknown, building traffic to your site will not be easy.

No kidding. (Sorry about the late reply. That'll be my scattered brain for you mate.) I signed up to BeatStars, which is where I plan to start selling my beats. :)

I will submit another option. Google Sites. You can make a free website with it that will have the sites.google.com url, but also get a domain name and link to that site and it will be a website.

    To get a domain - https://domains.google/intl/en_ca/

I’m personally still testing it out but it’s a better experience than Squarespace who charged me $50/month when a promo didn’t apply. I only paid for the domain and that was $19/year. I can always switch it back to a free “sites.google.com” url.
