I'm fully in acceptance that all speakers and headphones each have their own unique flavour. The pursuit of the "ultimate" is for those with deep pockets.
I'm learning to appreciate the various nuances between them all, as a contribution to the music, rather than the ultimate goal. That philosophy serves me (and my pockets) well.
I use Sony WF-1000XM4 earbuds, after reading a review of them, whilst in hospital. They totally blew me away, i never thought such tiny earbuds could sound as good as they do.
Agreed for sure. As long as I’m enjoying the music I listen to and it sounds good, I’m fine. I have a couple speakers, headphones, and ear buds. That’s all I need right now. And all I can afford haha
Have queried this elsewhere, but anyone have any tips on earbud headphones with a really quality inline mic good for voiceovers? It doesn't need to be perfect, it's inevitable with these mics that they'll need other apps in the fx chain to sound decent.
+1 for this. It's been the Holy Grail for me.
Bumping this! Actually, even online it's hard to get info on this. Most reviews focus on the headphones and give insufficient detail about mic quality. I've spent hours researching this and still haven't found a solution. Probably for me just using a separate, quality lav mic is the way to go, clipping it onto my earbuds or headphones cable where the mic would be.
I'd be surprised if you'd ever achieve the quakity you'd get from a dedicated lav mic, in a combo unit. But it'd perhaps be worth signing up to head-fi, and asking there. Lots of knowledgeable and friendly folk who might be able to point you in the right direction. Just be careful if you’re in any way interested in head gear. GAS is everywhere
Good tip! I generally don't have much gas for anything other than apps so am not too worried, and would be happy enough to spend a few hundred bucks getting something that will last (assuming I don't keep destroying them and having to pay for expensive repairs by forgetting to use a limiter while testing new apps, doh!)
To answer the main thread question: I listen to most music in earbuds or iem's these days, and have done for many years. For me, it’s the best way to listen.
I suppose you've ruled out gaming headsets and mono 'Zoom' headsets?
I did take a look at gaming headsets - for me though I really appreciate portability. Already have way too much stuff and will be making a big move this year
There're mid-sized options like the Jabra Evolve 40:

the Plantronics Voyager Focus:

and various similar. here:

Maybe they're too big!
A lot of the professional, low-profile headsets e.g for dancing vocalists, are in MONO and require wireless packs to plug into. Very expensive, also
Thanks, will look at some of these. Mono is definitely a massive no-no tho!

A few months ago, I temporarily settled for the Teenage Engineering M-1 headphones with built in and boom mic. Foldable and compact, great audio quality. Mic is pretty good. But not pocketable, and I would love to find something that would be equivalent or higher grade on the mic side of things, but would fit in a pocket.
Would they work for you temporarily too @Gavinski? I picked mine up brand new on eBay from a guy closing down his music store, for just £30. I figured it was worth a go.
These are the ones:
https://www.amazon.co.uk/Teenage-Engineering-M-1-Personal-Monitor/dp/B082WJ7YQ3/
Details from TE site (note the mic spec is listed too):
foldable headphones with detachable and built in microphones. M-1 is perfect for voice sampling with OP-Z. 1200 mm audio cable with 3.5 mm 4-pole (trrs) plug connectors included.
frequency response: 20 Hz - 20 kHz (mic: 100 Hz - 10 kHz)
driver sensitivity: 100 dB SPL ±3 dB @ 1 kHz
driver impedance: 32 Ω
I hope this helps.
Thanks Ando - hopefully the ambeos will do a good enough job! Unfortunately I couldn't find any in China at the silly low prices you guys can get them at in the UK, so I paid quite a bit for them. Could have bought in the UK and got them shipped here, but Chinese customs are a nightmare. I've also got my rode lav 2 which is decent enough though needs a lot of cranking of the input gain. Ridiculous how quiet it is.
I hope so too. I'm going to try a pair. I found some for just over £24, and an Anker lightning to USB C adapter for just over £10. I might just grab a pair today.
I have a Boya BM-1 lav mic which serves me well. I think the mic in the TE M-1s is equivalent.
Jeez, that's insanely cheap, lol, those retailed at 300 bucks when first released
Anyone had experience with the Pixel Finch lightning lav mic?

Ok, so...Just looked at the AMBEO manual, and it seems there's also a MONO (default) mic. Would love to hear an example of recording via that @Gavinski if you're up for it

37 Euros, here in Spain. However, they only have the white version
Yeah unfortunately I was also only able to order the white version (hmm, my phone just autocorrected that to 'shite' lol). And I paid a lot more than 37 euros here in China 😂 but let's see, if they're good they'll be worth it
AI scarily on-point
I know. It's brilliant, eh? The Boya is a bargain too, in my experience.
No option for the black version that I can find here, but I don't mind, I'm quite fond of the look of the white.
Also for those of you who weren't happy with the sound of the AirPods pros, be sure to get the Comply foam tips. They give you a better seal, which leads to MUCH improved bass response. Also, they stay in your ears a lot better too.
