Racetrack Playa (an ambient storyboard)
It's approximately 6:45am on the Racetrack Playa in Death Valley. As the sun rises, the wafer-thin sheet of ice from the previous night begins to melt and crack. The flat, glassy lake bed becomes a huge mosaic of jagged, icy lily pads. A gale force wind blows across the valley and everything begins to vibrate. The sun continues to rise, and soon all of the ice has melted and evaporated. Everything goes back to the way it's been for thousands of years. Except... the stones have moved.
I used a few of my older apps such as PPG Infinite, Phonem, and Mitosynth. I controlled them with a few MIDI tracks created in the piano roll editor. I also used Pure Piano, Moog Model D, and a drum loop from Blocs Wave that I augmented with a snippet from DrumComputer. There were many more tracks, but I started deleting ones that didn't contribute. The PPG apps were very problematic. They crashed in spectacular fashion. One crash caused me to rip my headphones off as fast as I could. Fortunately, no damage to my ears or iPad. No special effects except for Cubasis Channel Strip, Studio EQ, a little Reverb, Stereo Width, and MagicDeathEye.

How evocative and can picture slo mo drone footage skimming over the surface of this almost alien landscape.
An interesting balance of melodic sounds and more experimental textures. I listened to this once just to hear the mix and then again with the storyboard fully in mind. Enjoyed it both ways. I suspect I'll return a few more times. I'll keep an eye on the stones.
@belldu @MadeofWax Thank you, gentlemen. After The Wildest Ride I thought I would try something entirely different. I first heard of the Racetrack when I was in college. I recently read an article discussing how the mystery was finally solved in 2013. I was thinking about that as I worked on this, and it seemed like a good idea for a song. Thanks for listening!
Tremendous clarity. Very different from your main thrusts. It’s feeling more and more that this is a music forum as well as a tech forum. I know not everyone appreciates that, but I do.
Thanks, Mike. I’m mostly a wanker, but once in a while I stumble across something halfway decent. This isn’t one of them, but it has a few moments. I’m trying to do something different. My wife says I’m very trying! I dig the tech, but I’m more into the music. I think I’m getting better at it. Off to bed soon, and praying for you both.
I have to disagree… it’s is far more than half way decent 👌
I appreciate how humble you are about your work… it makes you more tolerable as a person since your work, like most good shit, only serves to try and humble the rest of us. And that cannot happen… hubris is just about all I have left.
This one is really different in your catalog. And in a direction I personally appreciate because it’s useful for narrating imagery.
I always hope my music can conjure images for the listener and really hope they can make it to the end. I never have a problem listening to your work from beginning to end and I generally go for a second helping if I want to decode your techniques.
OK… I’m current. Now I needed to check out the new stuff from @jo92346 and the beleagured Mike Levy.
