Prime Numbers & Rhythm vid : 3 copies of Modosc's Buchla-inspired ID700 to give away

Prime Numbers & Rhythm: 3 copies of Modosc's Buchla-inspired ID700 synth to give away. Details are in the pinned YouTube comment!

🟢 About this video:

I recently watched the Marc Evanstein video on The Music of The Primes, a geeky and fascinating journey into one particular intersection between maths and music, the rhythms of musical cycles based on prime numbers. Marc is a researcher working on composing and coding. A link to that excellent video can be found in the pinned YT comment (I strongly recommend watching it to fully understand what is going on here), as well as links to Mark's free SCAMP (Suite for Computer-Assisted Music in Python) software, and his Patreon, where you can pick up a copy of the midi file from his video.

Anyway.... I got my hands on the midi file over at Mark's Patreon, loaded it into Geert Bevin's free Midi Tape Recorder app - since it is capable of playing microtonal midi - and fed it into the fantastic ID700 synth, adding some effects etc. I Iove the results and find them hypnotic and trance-inducing. I used Tonebooster's Spectogram app to visualise the frequency spectrum and you can see how it evolves over time as the lower frequencies become more dominant.

Some more details of what is happening on a rhythmic and melodic level, details of the giveaway, as well as links to vids I made on some of the apps used here can also be found in the pinned YT comment.

Please remember btw that:

a) the chances of winning are highest on Twitter and Insta, so if you use those platforms, maximise your chances by following me there, as well as on YT. It takes me some time after posting on YT to post on Insta & Twitter tho.

b) competition instructions vary slightly on each platform, so please read the instructions on each carefully to ensure your entry is valid.

Fascinating exercise! I really like the results. It sounds so intentional, yet is generated purely by maths… (well, and helped along by your production, obvs! :) )

  • Roughly on the same topic...

Polyrhythms are Polypitch - live @ Ableton Loop, Berlin

  • Interesting stuff, almost sound bath territory. Nice visualisation with the spectrum, did odd things to my kitten, moments of calm interspersed with chaos. Though that’s just her anyway 🤷‍♂️😅

  • Very interesting. Would work as a sound art performance in a gallery environment as well.

    Pretty cool!

@svetlovska @Krupa @Slush thnx folks! Glad this is getting a good reception, I love this kind of thing both on a musical and an intellectual level.

  • I’m just watching this and it’s fantastic, right up my street.

Will give Marc’s video a go later. It sounds like some of the concepts have a relationship to the Subharmonicon, as well (poly rhythms and the downwards harmonic series), which is additionally interesting for me. Plus I have a thing about using prime number clock divisions for generative pieces in MiRack, so things don’t lock together repetitively. So you’ve managed to push several of my buttons at once with this!

  • Yeah, this flicks my nerd bean.

  • Holy Mandelobrot: Rhythm and Harmony are fractal instances of the same relationships operating on different scales of resolution.

Since I only have knowledge of one programming tool for IOS... I'm going to play with MIDI Primes in Mozaic.

Are there any efforts to take some of the great python music tools and get them working on IOS?

  • Following on from my previous comment, you might find Hainbach’s video about the SubH interesting,

Not sure….I know that @dcollett is taking that SCAMP course, he might know, and could also mention how hard it is to learn

Will be my post-breakfast viewing, cheers!

  • This screenshot from Marc's vid gives an idea of what's going on here. This is from the early section. As the piece continues, it looks a lot like some kind of nighttime city scape viewed from a plane window. Gorgeous stuff!
