Stretch Midi?
I’m looking for an iPhone sequencer or drum machine that will do something I’m finding quite difficult to describe, making it quite hard to search for.
Essentially I want my tracks to have different numbers of steps BUT I also want them to sync. So say my bass drum pattern is seven steps long, and my snare drum pattern is four steps long- both tracks would take (say) one second to complete a full cycle. I don’t want them to only sync up every 28 steps, if you know what I mean.
I think this is something the desktop version of ableton can do. I come from a background of using a midi event list editor, where it’s easy, but I can’t find any iPhone sequencers with a midi list editor.
So, is anyone familiar with an app that might work for me? Having tracks where the steps can be different values wouldn’t work if the steps can only be traditional values (1/8th, 1/16th triplets etc). But if the steps can be any value (1/7th, 1/11th etc) it would work. If they can sync.

Four Pockets Euclidean is one
there are more I have to do some digging
Cykle PolyBeat and Drumcomputer as well
DRAMBO will do too
PolyBeat 2 will approximate as well
Brilliant! Thanks very much!
I'm not sure I understand what you're after, but Xequence2 has midi stretch. By this I mean you can take any pattern and stretch it to any length you like. If being able to stretch each of the patterns you mentioned to the same length, keeping the original relative timing within each pattern then Xequence 2 can do it.
Atom 2 does a non destructive thing where you can stretch it but it can maintain relative timing p.mi think, that’s something you might have to check out… however I’m not sure how to do it. it’s been a long night. Lol
That sounds like what I’m looking for. Thanks.
Thanks!
I think he is referring to Atom’s tempo multiplier
How does that work, exactly? Does it only deal with whole numbers?
Nope, the tempo multiplier goes up or down in decimal points. Up 1, 1.01, 1.02, etc…or Down 1, .99, .98, etc…
You can use it to speed up or slow down playback independent of host tempo. Negative values result in reverse playback(!).
You'd have to calculate how much to speed up or slow down to stay in sync with other clips though. Also, you need one instance of Atom 2 for each clip. If you're dealing with a lot of clips this could be an issue.
Xequence 2 has it all arranged on a timeline with snap and bar markers to help out. It's a standalone app though, which some people find too inconvenient for their tastes.
That sounds promising!
Stand alone vs complicated maths equations...I might come down on the side of stand alone, in the end.
I love it. Switching between full screen apps is no problem
Since he added the return to host button in Xequence2, switching back and forth is pretty painless.
True, X2 should definitely be in consideration as well.
It sounds like this could be the one!
Plus Xequence 2 has an update allowing mpe, which is quite a big deal if you're into that
True. Not just allowing. Recording and maybe more importantly editing. It’s not an Au, but does have IAA and AB3, which means there’s a few great ways to still fit it in to a mostly Auv3 workflow. If your main workflow is AUM, this is how I use it. I open X2 in standalone, then load as an IAA app in an audio slot inside AUM. I then connect the midi by sending the correct midi channel channel from x2 to the correct instrument inside AUM. It won’t open in an Au window like an Au, but by tapping on the X2 icon in AUM, or the AUM icon in X2 it jumps between using the 2 with relative ease. Definitely watch a video or 2 on the tube to get a much better idea of the app then text can accomplish.
