Quickly remap MIDI to a different instrument

I’m a little intimidated by the amount of knowledge here, and I’m a total beginner in iOS, so I very well might have missed something very basic.

What I’m looking for is a way to quickly switch which instrument my MIDI controller is controlling on AUM. For instance, if I have 3 tracks all with Korg Model D and they are all playing sequenced MIDI, I want to hit a button and be able to change parameters on the first track, which is playing bass, and then hit it again and twist some knobs to change parameters on Model D in the next track, and so on.

I’ve mapped one controller to open a plugin on button press and then I can change parameters with the on screen knobs, but I’d prefer to have it so the button press opens the plug-in, the MIDI controller stops controlling one instrument, and starts controlling the new one.

Is this an impossible dream? Or shamefully basic functionality I’ve overlooked?

I appreciate the assistance, it’s been hard to parse all the info I’ve looked over about getting things mapped.

  • I would try setting up each Model D on a different Midi Channel.
Then I would try changing the Midi Channel of the controller to match whichever instance I was trying to control at that moment.

Your setup may require additional midi utility apps or a bit more complexity, but that is a basic idea to get you started.

  • Changing the MIDI channel was my first thought as well. There are ample utilities to accomplish that if the controller isn't able to.

  • Unless you have an encoder controller. If using controller knobs. The value will set to the previous synth, whenever you switch synths.

I used Drambo ( there maybe other apps )

    To route midi in aum.

You point a keyboard at drambo. Then if theres 8 tracks in aum. You choose different output midi channels in Drambo tracks. Point the Drambo at all synths. Then I think filter all other channels in aum per channel. So it matches the Drambo output channel per track.

You could map you controller to launch each plugin in aum and map the same to Drambo tracks. So your controller is then like scenes on a nanokey.

but dosent deal with knobs being in different place, when you switch synths.

If its just key and switch tracks so theres no midi and audio on other tracks, plus launch app.

Drambo or another app ( maybe free )

This is a good point, often overlooked until one actually tries to work this way.

  • Should be other apps.

I have a microkey without buttons. So I would just place Drambo track buttons somewhere on screen.

Launching apps would then fit so it covers Drambo ( but not track selectors )

But you say you can midi map a button to launch apps.

You can then not have Drambo on screen.

But map the track selectors within Drambo and give same data to launch apps in AUM parameters.

It would switch Tracks, plus launch app.

    Video shows how to route.

What are other midi apps. Midifire?

For switching tracks. So you have note midi.

  • No worries @bezz_jeens we all started somewhere. Welcome.

  • Thank you everyone!!! I’ll try everything out tomorrow when I jam. Just got drambo, seems like an easyish way to do it. Despite watching so many tutorials, I’m still struggling to get my head around this whole workflow, especially for playing live and transitioning between songs.

  • Ok so I’ve done the setup with drambo, however when I unselect channel 1 or channel 2 in the channel filter as @sigma79 shows, it unselects that channel in both tracks. Any idea why this would happen?

  • I figured it out! The channel filter at the bottom of the track is global. If you go to the midi in setting within the plug-in window, it’s per track channel filtering. Whew.
