Can Koala Only Quantize Live Recording Input to 1/16th notes?

It seems no matter what the grid is set to, if quantize is turned on during recording the Koala sequencer only quantizes to 1/16s. Is that right, or am I missing something?

  • Ill respond only cause no one has,not that I feel im qualified to do so.

Yesish. my work around has always been a form of division, for instance

On the latest project in koala i brought in one of my exports from cubase (melody, bass, etc) basically everything but drums. the original tempo in cubase was 119 and the "loop" was 8 measures. I needed more reolution for my live drum ( hooked up to a electronic kit) So i took the bpm to 238 and changed the beats per measure to eight. It seems to quantize at double it internal rate. The resolution has always in the past seemed to get better with this method but another wall always comes up in that now im dealing with the bpm ceiling of 240. So ive gotten use to this restriction therefor changing even the way I go about setting up my ideas in cubase knowing the hurdle will come at some point.

Ive said it before but for some reason i cant stop using koala even though its not perfect. I guess im a glutton for punishment

    Cheers

That’s definitely a work around. I do a similar thing to get it to swing the 1/8th notes- but in the opposite direction, by halving the tempo. Like you, I run up against the limit at 40bpm, which seems crazily high for the lowest possible tempo

Koala is a masterpiece, but the strange and pointless sequencer limitations are quite baffling. I’ve been using sequencers since 1988, hardware and software, and I’ve never come across one that didn’t let you adjust the live quantize before. Rare to come across one now that won’t swing the 8th notes too. Even the SP12 did that, in 1985. But you had to double the tempo to swing the 16th notes.

  • In AUM, tempo range is 20-999 bpm.
    The AU follows host tempo.
    Does that help at all?

  • 20bpm is generally the lowest tempos go on iOS. I think this is due to it being the bottom of Ableton Link's range.

That does help! I hadn’t thought of that. I use Audiobus, but I just checked and it does 20bpm too. Thanks.

    What is ableton link?

It's like a common metronome for apps in and across devices on the same WiFi or Ethernet network. Apps and hosts with Link support can run at a common tempo, automatically adjusting if one of the apps changes the tempo. With Link Start/Stop support they can optionally also start and stop at the same time.

It's like MIDI clock but with many advantages and a few disadvantages. Most apps support it these days. Because they do, they're limited to the 20bpm floor for tempo.

U ever figure this out I just started making jams on koala in the last six months or so seriously been an avid reason / fl and used to use a lot of ableton back in the day but I don’t know if it’s an update that wasn’t around last February when u were searching endless for this solution with no guarantee only work arounds so it seems … I feel dumb saying this bc i highly feel like it had to be update but easily just click on the bpm in koala under beats by bar (my favorite area cause I love recently making 3/4 6/3 5/4 7/5 beats lately 😤😳🤯) it’s a drop down menu that says quantize 1/16 from there click on it simply change it to whatever note pattern ur heart desires !!! But I’m assuming this is old news now so sorry don’t wanna seem like a dick or a know it all cause I’m new here and also wanna know is this still a pretty active site for koala beat content I got tons of amazing stuff collecting dust on my phone I’ll start sharing in here just found this site today tryna figure out if I turn off quantize record hi hats then turn it back on will it only quantize my new patterns or the hats too cause reason doesn’t do whatever wasn’t being recorded so I’m hoping it’s the same gonna try it out now myself and probably not be success just wanted to look before I tried myself but in the process found yall on this site who also use koala so what’s up !!! I’m Darius from anchorage Alaska but currently live in north Seattle for the moment mostly make hip hop / rap I add rap cause i like blends of traditional hip hop neo soul esk drums with trap but not like that weird trap soul shit from 2012 or w/e … heavily experimental much more than ever before lately I’ll post some jams tonight maybe someone may like my stuff and doesn’t think I’m weird and suck (I am 600% weird that’s kinda my thingy thang insert king von tweet voice here) get it he was affiliated with the group of killer from the chi 600 and he always tweeted about his killing being his thingy thang rather soft weird phrase for an actual hood Chicago gang member serial killer from the southside who was not from 63rd (STL) but ayyy serial killers pretty weird normal anyway in the first place and I honestly don’t understand why so many people open support listen and buy their music and pay for tickets for literal serial killers who rap now a days shits sus what if they kill u next show now what ??? Probably how Stan from that old white rapper song wanted to go out by his fav he was pretty good wonder what happened to that guy like slim shady or sumn I think if I remember correctly ?? Rambling now toodles bye for now ttyl 👋 ✌🏻
