Any comforting stories about tempered-glass screen-protectors?
Got an iPad 9, last year, and immediately added both a tempered-glass protector and a seriously tank-like case. The main reason for the hyper-protection is 'cause at some point I planned on selling it to upgrade and I wanted to keep it spotless.
Not that that's changed. However, the bulk and heft of the thing (I think the case nearly doubles the weight of a unit not known for being the slickest of the line-up) seriously puts a dampener on my joy of using it, and is one of the main reasons for not using it when out-and-about.
I'm thinking of replacing the case with a very light-weight one that protects the back and corners from scratches and light dropage, but wondering if the tempered-glass is enough to protect it from a face-plant onto a stone perhaps.
The biggest advantage of the rugged case is how much the screen would be elevated from the floor in such a scenario, but alas...
Anyone have any stories of wonder (i.e how the F did it survive THAT?!?) or wor (i.e I wish I'd bought that 'Defender' case)?
Thanks

Nothing will prevent a faceplant onto a stone at 3 to 4 feet if it hits just right. 3 phones prove it. Keep the tempered-glass protector it helps 2 of those 3 survived while as the glass sacrificed itself. The 3rd hit in the corner just where the glass wasn't.
I have a targus case with good edge bumpers and a tempered-glass protector. Yes it adds bulk and weight, but after a 1,000 investment im determined to protect it.
Both my son and I have iPhone screens are uncracked thanks to tempered glass protectors. We have both had drops that cracked the protector but not the phone...similar drops cracked my previous phone's screen and are the reason i started using them. I have no idea about protectors for the ipad. I use an inexpensive light case to protect it.
Thanks! To be clear, I have no intention of removing the glass protector. What I am removing is the extra large buffer space that the case offers between its own front edges and the screen.
Thinking of going from this:

The lighter case does have some extra lift, but nothing like the one I have.
This is really nothing to do with aesthetics, and everything to do with having to hold in one hand while using the pen with the other. A saving of 300+ grams is nothing to be sniffed at. Having said that, your post is making me re-think a little.
Thanks!
Yeah...Sounds exactly what I'm looking for i.e the protector to take the 'hit', even if it breaks in the process.
I had two other iPad screens break. Both were due to my own stupidity (Apparently when one literally starts nodding off, that's the time to stop reading .
I actually have insurance, so in the eventuality of it happening I should be covered. But doubt they'd be obligated to make it look like it's in A1 sellable condition.
Guess I have to weigh up the possible future sale against daily inconvenience. And when I put it like that, it seems like I should go light.
The tempered glass has saved my phone many times but I still use a lightweight case as well. I’m pro glass
I don’t have a comforting story about having a glass protector. But I do have a horror story about NOT having a glass protector. On vacation. Sitting by the pool. 6 month old $900 iPad Air 4. I set the iPad down on the chair and it slipped through the slats on the chair, did a perfect flip, and landed face down on the cement that was only about a foot away. Now all my apps have a spiderweb feature in the UI. Fortunately it still functions fine but the trade in value is zero.
Get the glass.
The only drawback of the glass screen protectors is that they interfere with the Apple Pencil, causing wobbles when you draw slow diagonal lines. This only matters if you ever use the iPad for drawing though.
I have had a couple of iPhone drops, with tempered glass. But I also have big bumoers on iPhone cases, so the screen never touches the floor. In the case of the iPad, I'm looking to go as lo-profile as possible. So the protector would definitely take the full brunt of any potential drop.
This is not familiar water for me
OUCH!! I feel that
Anyway, as said, I already have the glass. Debating on whether to lose the bumper and trust the glass to take all the risk.
Using Apple pen with it. I did have 'designs' on learning to draw, but that’s a pretty low priority at the moment.
You can work around the issue to a certain extent by turning up the smoothing in Procreate or whatever app you use to draw.
I have a paper like alike screen protector on mine, I find the pencil works better.
I looked into them, but was put off by many users complaining that they not only dull the screen, but that after a certain period the scratches on the 'paper' become very visible. How obvious are these effects to you?
Are there any ill-tempered glass screen protectors?
“Anyway, as said, I already have the glass. Debating on whether to lose the bumper and trust the glass to take all the risk.”
I wouldn’t. The cost of a combination of a cheap case with bumpers and glass screen (which I have for my Pro) is worth every penny.
Saved my ass a few times. My iPad is still in stellar shape.
It does dull the screen slightly- but I’ve not seen any ‘scratches’. Then again I’m not a power user of the pencil.
Yeah..Not totally un-bumpered. Looks ike the one I want does have a certain 'lip', but without having it in my hand it's hard to tell. Will probably order it later today and check it out tomorrow. If I'm not confident about it I can always return it
Dulling I'm not so worried about. i certainly son't need accurate colour-distinction. Would love a bit more grip on the screen for writing purposes, as long as there's no trade-off in protection strength. Will do some more research.
Cheers
Just ordered the new case. Should be here tomorrow. Will update, when I've tested it.
Cheers
Case arrived. I really love it! Feels like going from a CRT to a flat panel.
Was only concerned about the weight, but everything about the older case made it awkward to use, and from a superficial perspective, just plain unattractive to look at.
One small downside it's now so much more obvious how much wasted space comes from the huge base-level bezels. It's a slight dampener on the experience, but nothing that makes me regret not paying the extra for an Air model.
Of course, there is a protection trade-off. It feels so naked. But in actuality the corners have extra bumper-age, there is a lip (albeit a very small one) that rises above the screen and the screen-protector really only leaves the tiniest amount open to potential harm.
Overall, feels like a huge upgrade and I definitely feel more inclined to take it out and about with me. Wish I'd done it much earlier
