Omega vs Nambu

I'm getting one of these in a few hours and I need some help deciding. I'm trying to step out of my usual box as I have mostly subtractive (along with romplers and also one additive, Ripplemaker) and I haven't really messed around with FM before.

These are my pros...
LaGrange is the most affordable, Omega seems like it's the easiest to use, and Nambu seems like it's the deepest.

Cons:
LaGrange and Nambu's presets don't sound as good as Omega's; from YouTube videos LaGrange doesn't seem like it sounds as good as Nambu or Omega (in comparision). Nambu is the most expensive. Omega seems geared more towards electro and may not be as versatile at least based from the videos I've seen.

One caveat....I'll be using this as an AU in Garageband on my iPhone, so screen resolution is important, although as long as I can still access the keyboard while adjusting parameters or testing presets, I'm happy. I have no MIDI controller.

I'm also concerned with stability

What do you all think?

Which of the two should I get ?

  • I’m going to tell you…
Lagrange is kinda not my favorite synth at all. It’s gonna be terrible fiddly to deal with on the phone. I am NOT impressed with the sounds that come with it or so far many sounds I’ve heard made with it…

Nambu, on the other hand is nice sounding for fm, it’s definitely NEW FM, not so much traditional…so if FM power is what you are into it’s nice…not so nice on a tiny screen though…

Omega sounds good too, probably the sweet spot for what situation you described, as it is easier to deal with on a smaller screen than the other two.

  • Don’t forget NFM or FM4. Maybe watch some videos on those…both seem to be easy to navigate as well but limited…which may be a good thing in fm

  • Nambu is the next generation of Lagrange. Lagrange has a ton of oscillator models and routing options but suffers imo from a somewhat opaque gui. Nambu solves the gui issue beautifully and then dials up the oscillator section (and everything else).

Otoh there are fantastic presets for Lagrange from @Spidericemidas , @richardyot and SoundofIzrael.

Can’t speak to Omega but Bleass are 100% solid.

I’d say with Nambu you are future proof. If you are unsure about FM get Lagrange at little cost plus the free preset packs at little cost and play around for a bit.

Ooooor you could shave your head, put on your combat boots, bid your loved ones goodbye and get ID700 😆

Thank you all for the help…it’s down to Omega and Nambu for me. I had LaGrange originally on there as the cheapest option .

I’m gonna try to see how Nambu looks on an iPhone. I REALLY like how it sounds but the size and the seemingly steep learning curve kinda gives me pause for thought right now, although I’m watching Gavinski’s video on it right now

I wasn’t a fan of Monolit so that and the color scheme kinda turned me off BLEASS (why my phone keeps capitalizing it I dunno ) but SampleWiz turned me around on that. Plus the screen layout seems to be consistent so i already know how it is gonna fit.

I’m leaning towards Omega but man Nambu sounds really good , and the matrix makes me think of the modular stuff my wife turned me on to when we first started collaborating.

Btw several of those mentioned are iPad only…no dice for me!

    And i’m already bald 🤣

  • I had “too many” FM synths and then I bought Omega… Before this I was put off by the Bleass colours, but tried Monolit and was very impressed by the usability. Omega also has that usability, I’ve successfully created patches inspired by KQ Dixie patches without difficulty - having all the operator envelopes on one page really helps with that! Maybe not deep, but it’s the FM synth I’ve been able to engage with to get what I want! (I’ve skipped Nambu due to having “too many” FM synths ;))

  • Ended up getting Omega…the screen size being just right sealed the deal for me, as did Doug Woods’s video with his preset pack (I’m gonna get that too after I mess around for a bit )glad I did…it freaking sounds great!

  • I think I have never used Nambu as an FM synth.

Would buy but think it might be better to learn synthesis from Id700. Nambu. Aparillo. Phasemaker. Opl.

but might end up buying anyway.

If its beneficial for multi tracks.

  • I’m glad I got Omega…it’s freaking awesome!

I might be making my first preset batch on the forum 😎

    Thank you!

I’m starting to actually prefer FM vs the other types of synthesis, which I never expected

I like fm sounds a lot too. I can’t say that I am an fm programmer at all. I’ve been chomping at the bit to buy an elektron digitone for two years now…maybe one day. I have fm8, almost all the fm synths of iOS, the one from waves ‘Flow Motion’ which is a favorite…and in hardware the kernels engine on iridium…I have fm in some form or another in almost every synth I have lmao…it’s ridiculous actually.

  • I almost got KQDixie but that UI hurts my eyes pretty bad

KQD is great for digging away at DX7 presets, Omega all the way for easy programming.

It is a horrible UI, but it is a really powerful synth.

  • Worth buying Omega if just bought Nambu?

    Dont want a redundent app

Which probably wont be the case.

Although its all about buying best apps.
