DAW LP vs Needlepoint for dusty vibes

Can any vinyl simulation aficionados chime in on choosing between DAW LP vs Needlepoint?

The goal is to create dusty textures over synths, noise, field recordings and soft pianos. To apply, rinse and repeat.

I have DAW LP iOS already, and am looking to explore Needlepoint. On iOS and Mac.

Also, secondary to this, how about for smudging and blurring? Magic Blur? What else?

  • Needlepoint is a lot deeper than DAW LP, and I think will deliver more interesting results.

  • That was my thinking. Thanks @richardyot

  • I think Needlepoint is a great plugin. Very deep. But I'd also recommend looking at 4Pockets' 'Time machine'. Lovely app

  • Thanks, I'll check out Time Machine. Thanks for the video. I'm going to download a trial of the desktop plugin of Needlepoint, and have a listen.

I don't feel that Time Machine is going to be the one for me. Let's see what Needlepoint can come up with…

Yeah, needlepoint is much more interesting, imo, and a lot of ppl may have missed the drop down menu allowing you to change the vinyl emulation to 78 rpm etc

As for smear, actually I am really enjoying using the AB Vortex X reverb for that, playing with the time and space settings with high viscosity settings.

You could maybe try something like fac transient or blue mangoo attack softer, though neither has the ability to very radically change attack

Definitely. I've run Needlepoint in Ableton just for 40 minutes, and I'm completely sold on having it for both Mac and iPad.

Thanks for the AB Vortex X suggestion, I'll check it out.

I was wondering about attack softener, as I already have it.

Subtle is all I'm looking for. I can always rinse and repeat to get the desired effect.

Wow, ab vortEx looks great, checking out the website etc. I might have to give it a test run.

    Thank you!

  • Be aware that the ios version of AB Vortex is a quite seriously slimmed down version - I wish they had just released a version identical to the desktop one. I do really like it but you might find yourself having to use it in conjuction with an eq app. Also don't be confused by the video where the dev tries to make it sound a lot more complex than it actually is 😂 - viscosity is basically just a kind of lag / smoothing control. Does sound excellent though!

Okay, thanks, that's all really helpful to know.
