Setting up a domain for a website?

Anyone here have experience of setting up a domain for a website. I am being presently led around the garden path by a domain name company who pass the buck.
I have an error which reads CNAME conflicts with an existing record on the same host. Try as I might I cannot resolve this conflict. I have used live chat to no avail. I have moved from IONOS to Zenfolio. At first the domain company claim it was IONOS who still had the record, IONOS say all records should have been wiped when I left. Is the problem with Zenfolio?
Just wish I had gone with GoDaddy who offer 24/7 suppport.

Thanks for listening and any advice would be greatfully received.

  • GoDaddy do offer good support, but they also upsell you deals and packages unless you periodically specify them not to do that (my experience is from a few years ago, maybe it’s changed now…)

Currently use bluehost, not yet needed support, buying domains was easy and no surprises so far.

I've used many of them (I was a web designer/developer for many years). I use Namecheap now, for almost 10 years, to buy domains, and to manage DNS and other advanced settings. I've never had an issue with them, they've always provided great support if needed, and I get full access to all the DNS settings I need.

I highly recommend them, and they may still have a sale on for transferring domains in, so it's a good time to move.

    Main website: https://www.namecheap.com

    Transfer sale page: https://www.namecheap.com/domains/transfer/domain-transfer-sale/

I hope this helps. I would recommend you go on support/sales chat with Namecheap about your issues, and ask them if they will be able to help with the transfer and resolution of these problems.

Another company I use solely for hosting, since 2003 is http://inmotionhosting.com and again, you might like to check them out, and have a chat with sales/support about your situation.

But my top choice of the two would be Namecheap if it's solely for domain and DNS management. I also host my email through them, again with no issues. I never tried their hosting, as everything was settled at InMotion Hosting. But I'm confident they would come up with the goods there too.

  • I second inmotionhosting.com. Pretty good support all round from them.

  • I agree with the Namecheap recommendation. I’ve owned well over a hundred domains and they’ve been the easiest to work with so far.

I thought if you deleted DNS records it would clear all records to a blank slate. I have done this but still have the CNAME conflict

    Check out Namecheap’s FAQs: https://www.namecheap.com/support/knowledgebase/article.aspx/579/2237/which-record-type-option-should-i-choose-for-the-information-im-about-to-enter/

In fact, you should contact them and see if they can answer your questions if you are even thinking of transferring to them. I’ve found them very helpful.

  • I have used Dreamhost for 15 years for all my photography / video websites. Best customer service ever

    I second this.
