Euclydian (Nu Jazz improvisation)

This is a Lydian piano improvisation over a relatively deep Euclidean synth and drums sequence E(7, 24, +2), E(14, 22), E(8, 11). I’m usually a linear DAW sort of guy but when this sequence spilled out, I had to jam along and this is the direct capture. In post, I automated the probability gate with MIDIMixer to give some shape and added a few FX toys as you do. Thanks for listening.

4Pockets Euclidean Sequencer, Dixie, OB-Xd, DigiStix 2 (Auto sampled Roland R5), Ravenscroft 275, EOS 2, Medusa, Mozaic Probability Gate, Mela MIDI scale filter, MIDIMixer, Grand Finale.

  • Wow!

    This is quite impressive. It reminds me of some of the complex and quite intricate pieces Frank Zappa composed in the years around his symphony period.

  • Andy, this is great. I really enjoyed what you did with all the instruments.

  • Really appreciate the feedback @poppadocrock, @SNystrom, @dcollett - thank you.

    The complexity was a happy accident. If I had analysed the randomly generated backing sequence before laying down the solo I think the result would have been quite stilted. The drums are an 11 beat pattern. I’m not sure what I was locking into.

  • I only know how to play Old Jazz, but this I like.

  • We don’t get to hear enough stuff from you, Andy. I can always count on you for originality (which is the highest comment I can give a fellow musician). Keep on keeping on, bro.

  • Old jazz , nu jazz
    Every jazz, but true jazz … (Love for Sale)

    Thank you @Wrlds2ndBstGeoshredr. Pleased you liked it. I saw that my influence Norwegian pianist Bugge Wesseltoft declared his style as Nu Jazz and I prefer the term to ‘jazztronica’ so that’s what I went with. Same old notes though 😀

  • Blown away by your comment Mike @LinearLineman - it’s like I’ve won a Grammy! I wish I could say that I only post when I have something new to say but truth is I am too easily distracted and feeling obliged to make YT videos is a huge drain on available time. Euclydian is a new start for me and I’m truly encouraged by the response. Keep on keeping on back atcha.

  • I also am a linear DAW kind of guy. I have tried all kinds of ways of using randomness to generate music but it always leaves me wanting. Ends up like listening to a fan (not to downplay the meditative value of listening to a fan). But this is excellent. The “happy accident” workflow you used is something I am going to try. I have been going through a creative block lately and this inspires me. I had dismissed euclidian sequencers mostly because I did not think the effort of understanding it would be worthwhile. You have changed my mind. Thank you sir.

  • I enjoyed this. (Am a fan of Bugge Wesseltoft too.)

  • It’s Snowing on my Piano is a christmas favorite.
    Very inspiring @AndyHoneybone

  • This is good stuff, great use of the Euclidean app. :)

  • Hi @boomer,
    thanks for the comments. Great to hear my piece has inspired you - I really hope your exploration bears fruit. I bought Euclidian with no expectation beyond using it as a source to help me re-cable a MIDI patchbay for my hardware. Less than a week later I had shared my first piece in months. The test will be if I can repeat the magic. May the greatest common divisor be with you.

  • @rollin, @crifytosp,
    Your comments much appreciated. I particularly like Bugge’s collaborations with DJs Henrik Schwarz and Prins Thomas.

    @svetlovska,
    Kind of you to say. I’m only scratching the surface of what the app can do. As you’ll know, lots more operational modes to explore.

    @stochastically
    Absolutely honoured to have one of your visual comments. It’s a fair likeness! Love it.

  • Euclidean seems to pop out some great toe tapping rhythms and this is a great example.
    Superb piano playing. My cup of (Yorkshire) tea 🙏

  • Thank you @GeoTony. Yes, some very agreeable rhythms as your ‘4354 Euclides’ well demonstrates. My piano would have been Yorkshire played if the boundaries hadn’t been changed in 1974.
