Audio interface isn’t recognized anymore

edited February 2023 in Hardware

I have a Steinberg UR44. Solid as a tank and has worked flawlessly for a year or two.
Suddenly it isn’t recognized by neither iPad or MacBook. It turns on just fine but it doesn’t connect via the USB port. I’ve checked with different cables, of course.
The USB port has always felt a bit tight, needs a bit of force, but not a lot. However, doesn’t seem broken or anything.
Is it possible that it’s broken, or is there a software solution that I am not aware of.
Really frustrating, as I have a gig tomorrow 😣

  • I have the same Steinberg. 2018 iPad Pro 11”.
    Haven’t noticed any issues.
What OS are you on and what iPad do you have?

Haven’t experienced any issues until yesterday when it suddenly couldn’t connect to the iPad. I’m on an iPad Air 4 from 2020 and latest IOS.
I fear that the USB output on the iPad is somehow broken, because it requires a bit of force to put the cable in. But it doesn’t seem loose or broken as such. I don’t know.

  • FWIW I once I had the behringer uca222 interface disappear/ not recognised after a minor iOS update. I tried lots of things and then gave up and when the next update came it reappeared.

  • For it to not be recognized by either the iPad or MacBook it would suggest that the problem lies with the interface.

Are there any firmware updates available?

  • @galmandsværk . I’m going to have a chance to try it out a little later and I’ll report back.
I reset my iPad every time before hooking it up and the steinberg always sees it.
I have a Arturia minilab 3 and it’s hit or miss recognizing it.
Sometimes I reboot a couple of times before it sees it.
Does the iPad function properly when plugging other things into the port?

  • Thanks, everyone. It seems to be the interface that is faulty. The iPad works with other interfaces, charger, headphones, etc.
Tried putting the interface into my MacBook but it didn’t recognize it either. So strange.
Better write Thomann and ask them to check it.

  • Yeah I just checked it out here. Everything worked fine.
    Sorry you’re having those issues.
Let us know how you get it sorted if you don’t mind.

Perhaps there is a way to reset it? Interfaces usually have persistent settings (so that they retain settings between sessions), it is possible that those settings somehow became corrupted and that some sort of forced reset might clear them out.
