Audio line in to iPad or laptop

What are my options for feeding an audio line in to the iPad? Do I need a full blown audio interface, if so, is it a particular kind?

The audio line in I'm concerned with is microcassette player (3.5mm line out) right now.

Later, I'll be looking to feed audio in from an OP-Z, and from my iPhone, to my iPad and MacBook Pro. Also, to feed audio in to the sampler on the OP-Z from my iPhone, iPad, and laptop.

Any pointers would be gratefully received.

  • Yeah, you need some sort of interface in order to record external audio. What’s your ideal budget?

Up to £150 for this at the moment, happy to sell and upgrade in the future.

  • The OP-Z can be used as a audio interface (see here), so you could try to connect it to the iPad with an Apple Lightning to USB Adapter and use it as an interface.

Else, all interfaces will work that are class compliant plug and play audio interfaces (e.g. don’t need special drivers). For most you will also need the camera adapter to connect to the iPad.

I used an iRig Pro I/O for a while and now an M-Audio AIR. I bought both second hand for less than what you stated as a budget.

Thanks for the suggestions. Is there a camera adapter for USB-C iPads? I haven't been able to find one.

  • If you happen to already have an audio recorder such as a Zoom H1, that’ll do the job, with suitable cables for usb and audio

If you have usb-c you shouldn’t need a camera connector type device, just a usb c cable.

Thanks, I don't have a Zoom, but I have a Tascam DR100 Mk3. I use it for samples and field recordings. I'll look into whether I can use it in this way. I'm not sure it can be used as an audio interface, like the Zooms can (I previously had Zoom, a few years back),

That's what I was thinking. I forget that iPads came with lightning ports, although my phone (SE2020) has one.
