Air 2 and Mini 4 - no longer able to be updated.
Not sure what you’ll be missing though 😃 I’m sure they will battle on for a few years without too much of a fuss.
You might have to fork out for a new one now @Samu
Just kidding - I know you have already, but you must have squeezed the pips out of that Air 2 😀
Do you still have it?

I already have a 256GB 11” M1 iPadPro
I’m quite sure we’ll still see security updates for the iPadOS15.7.x, at least until iPadOS17…
The iPad Air 2 is still rocking along with highly degraded battery but connected to the charger it still does it’s thing in it’s own phase..l
I'm still holding on with the Air 2 here. I can't justify forking out for something new for the level of music production* I engage in.
* I believe the technical term is "wanking".
Some might say the inability to update to iOS16 is the best part of having an air2/mini4…….
Air2 owner here too. 9 years we've had these bad boys and they can still play! have a G4 powerbook that just up and quit awhile ago but ya long lifers.
It has succeeded in removing that period of time where I have to watch whether or not the next OS is "one update too far".
The Air 2 was one of the best iPads I ever had, second only to my 12.9" M1 Pro. Solid device. I do love my Mini 5, but eh it's okay.
Is it a good idea to upgrade my Air2 to 15.7.3 I have been lazy with upgrading lately...
It has some security updates, and had no noticeable affect on performance on my Air 2.
Sweet, I was hoping for that answer! Thanx
Did going from 14 to 15 have any noticeable affect on performance? I'm still on 14 and not sure if I should go to 15.7.3.
I don't exactly remember except to say it didn't adversely affect anything that I know of. I waited months before going to iOS 15, so it's possible I missed any drama in the early versions. I don't remember.
So glad my updating days (other than "point" security updates) are over for the Air 2. I'll keep updating if they provide security updates for it, but I don't need to concern myself over whether or not to follow major updates. 👍🏼
At some point FOMO will make me want to get a newer iPad as apps abandon 15, but for now Adulus is the only app that's even started poking that bear.
OK. Thanks for that. I think it might be time to upgrade.
Guys sorry for going a bit OT, but what sort of stuff can you do with an Air 2 with say 16gb ?
Can you use something like AUM with Mixbox CS or other fx and do live fx processing?
I already have a 2021 iPad Pro but if on old Air 2 could do a few things I would definitely think about picking one up and using it as a "closed system"....
Sure, an Air 2 can handle more than you would think. FX processing is fine - you just bump into CPU limitations after a certain number of channels / plugins. I get away with a lot - usually run out of ideas before I run out of device CPU, but ymmv.
Add Loopy Pro with it's "offloading" of inactive plugins, and you can go practically forever. Now I build up tracks in Loopy and as soon as the CPU starts to get overloaded, I bounce that part to a loop and idle the plugins. They just sit there consuming next to no resources until I decided to add or tweak something. Then I just delete the loop and reactivate the plugins. I can go all day like that and keep CPU usage below 50% easily.
Slower devices are also good as control surfaces, sending MIDI over Bluetooth to other devices. With something like TouchOSC, Midi Designer Pro 2, or (my favorite) Loopy Pro, you can set up sliders, knobs, etc on a slower device to control other devices.
That 16mb though ... that's your biggest impediment. You'll have to keep installed apps to a bare minimum and continually clean up file storage if you a lot of bouncing to audio. Not fun.
I got my Air2 out of mothballs recently and hooked to my old iTrack dock. Still works fine, but I wish I could roll it back to 32bit apps.
I use an iPad gen 3 running 9.3 as my internet radio and streaming platform. Most of the apps it runs clearly have been updated since 2012, or eliminated, but the ones stuck in time there still work. It has a battery problem in that the battery, fully charged, thinks it is dead if I unplug it. So I don't unplug it! The iPad gen 3 was replaced within months by the Gen 4 which was basically the same, but replaced the 30-pin iPod connector with a lightning one.
Current XCodes don't let you develop for devices that old, so I keep an old one around, with matching MacBook, that can actually do it.
The Air 2 was my first iPad and it held me from 2015 to 2019. I still get that OCD itch of thinking that updating it into the newer OS’s was just playing along with Cupertino’s planned obsolescence scheme but either way when the clicks & pops became too much on sessions with frozen tracks I knew it was time. Still holding on to it.
I hope my Air 5 holds for a few years. When I got the Air 3 I was happy for awhile but because of the 3GB RAM it was starting to peak during the lockdowns. I still use it, just very happy I waited until the 5 to upgrade since the 4’s specs weren’t a huge step forward…
Air 2 was/is a trooper. More reliable than my newer iPad pro. Never had any connection or power issues using a camera adapter (unlike the ipad pro which is horrible 🤬). Air 2 got handed down to my son who uses it every day with zero issues.
