Roland J6

A few people have said they have one of these and said how good they are so when I saw one cheap on eBay I picked it up.

How can I make it sync start with an iOS daw though?

  • I’ve never tried – I haven’t brought the two worlds together yet

Look forward to your report Capn on the J6 which is a fine little thing! You've also caused some chaos hereabouts with your MV-1 evangelism. In a wholly good (if spendy) kind of way :)

  • I fancy the MV1 too but I think it’s a little too spendy for my pockets.

Set the J6 to external and enable midi sync on the DAW. Works fine with Cubasis and Garageband, but I couldn’t get it to work properly with Zenbeats. Also works with AUM…
    Love the J6… 💕

  • You can always make use of the Korg SyncKontrol app which has Ableton Link - just plug it into the sync in slot and you’re off and running. I think you might need another iOS device for this though unless I’m mistaken. But even an ancient old beat up thing will run it for you.

  • The Midi implementation states this

    System
    Real Time
    Clock
    Start
    Continue
    Stop

So presumably all you would need is midi clock with start/stop.

    Have a look here...

    Hey!
I see 4 types of sync in J-6, Auto, Internal, Midi and USB. None of them is working for me, even if I set the Send MIDI Clock in garage band.
I can hear the sounds from the IPad, but the sync is not working

Make sure you only connect the J6 to your iPad after the J6 has been powered on. Set sync to external and it should work. If you have issues get a midi monitor to make sure the J6 is sending and therefore receiving midi.
Let us know how you go…

  • I don't have J6, but have S1, I guess they should work the same.

First, set the Clock to Auto in S1 and then switch MIDI Clock Send to On in AUM.

What you also have to do in AUM is select S1 as the MIDI destination at the bottom of the MIDI Clock dialog. I missed that at first, but after I switched it on it started working perfectly.

In Garage Band it just works after switching MIDI Clock to On.

I'm using the USB cable that I got with S1, maybe that bears some importance.
