Gorillaz "Clint Eastwood" is basically a Suzuki Omnichord preset

edited February 2023 in Other

Guys, this made my day 😂. Damon Albarn from the Gorillaz shows that the mega-hit "Clint Eastwood" is actually not much more than the Rock 1 preset of the Omnichord. In case you don't know the device, it was a musical instrument made by Suzuki in the 1980s that should allow easy access to music making and partly resembles a guitar. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Omnichord

  • Saw this! It's hilarious! Just goes to show genius steals!

  • Ahahahah

  • Haha yeah I also saw that :D lazy f***ers. Love it!

    Preset players FTW! 👊

To think that there's another musical genius out there who could do something like this and launch a career instantly, but instead they have been poking their iPad with a pencil for about two weeks now, still trying to hit that 0.03 sqmm sweet spot so they can move some dial in Fabfilter Twin while designing the perfect sound. 😶

  • Reminds me of this:

@Svetlovska, right that was one of the bangers of my youth in Germany. The Casio was also my first synth. Actually in another song, they also used the Omnichord.

Ha! I think it has aged very well. Still a banger, and a great deadpan video. VL Tone rules! :)

When I was at high school a guy brought one of those in and someone else a classical guitar, and played the song. I could barely play guitar at the time and was really impressed!

  • I love everything about that video.

  • Haha love this kind of thing.

If you've got the iOptigan app load up Folk And Other Moods - Guitar and hit some of those minor chords. That's what Goldfrapp did here (although probz with a real Optigan)

  • This reminds me of the famous "Sleng Teng" riddim in reggae music, it also starts from a keyboard preset (Casio MT40)

There are more than 450 versions of the song, here a documentary about this iconic riddim:

  • But they're committing the cardinal sin of EDM!

  • Love Damon. He’s also used (and I believe still uses) an iPad quite a bit in his music. With one album being majority iPad. The Fall I think.

Also makes me miss my Omnichord. I bought mine over a decade ago for $75 before the prices skyrocketed. Wish I would’ve kept it.

Wesley Willis, may he rest in peace. If you know, you know.

  • Imagine as an iPad music creator Damon secretly would be part of this forum. I wonder what username he would choose 😄

My first thought, I love it! (just not the version with the out of tempo "pangs", though. Sounds like someone forgot to mute a channel on the desk)

I even watched a bit of his actual Masterclass when I was (foolishly) subscribed for a while... Yawntastic stuff

he/they Gorillaz also did a version of Korg's iElectribe. Not sure if its still for sale on the AppStore. The downside was that the samples/sounds were copywrite protected so couldnt be used in commercial stuff...not that I ever used it that way.

EDIT: does look like its on the Store

You had to use the step sequencer because playing using the keys was virtually impossible.

That casio was my second synth! The first one was an even smaller casio. I’m going to start a threas about this 😆

Quite honestly I don’t remember how they did it, but it was really impressive to 16 year old me.

I remember that coming out but I never got it or the regular Electribe. Despite being a huge fan of the Electribe series. Which Korg would update the current one to AUV3. Or update it at all.

agreed re wishing for all things Korg to be AUv3.

there is that iElectribe cousin the Wave which is a pretty cool AUv3. But wheres everything else?
