Acoustic Drum Apps in 2023

I’m interested in apps with acoustic drum instruments specifically. What do folks use nowadays? Are there any more options now than there were 3 years ago?

I was using Drum Session but it’s abandonware (and not AUv3), tinkered with DrumPerfect Pro but find it way too fiddly. What else is there? Lumbeats apps are not AUv3, and I’d vastly prefer AUv3.

I guess there’s the drum sequencer + bring-your-own-samples route. What combos are folks using for that in the acoustic drum dept?

Please help get me up to date!

Comments

  • Try beathawk as they have some good acoustic packs

  • I've been pulling acoustic drum kit samples from desktop libraries, also a few sliced acoustic drum loops because they have just the right combination of drum sounds embedded in one file. When I need an AUv3, it's either AudioLayer or Drambo's Sampler.

  • GarageBand is my go to for this as it’s probably the closest we have on iOS right now.

I know a lot of people like AudioLayer though, but I haven’t gone that route. There’s also a lot of free drum loops apps which are good for some quick sampling.

  • Gladstone in Korg Gadget is really good, not AUv3 tho (unless the dream come true, and Korg bring gadgets to the AUv3 world)

  • Thanks folks, a few ideas of interest there (if nothing groundbreakingly new).

  • There’s nothing easier to use with more options than GarageBand. You can use their automated drummers or enter your own patterns very quickly and get good results. And with some clever post-processing and effects, you can make your chosen kits sound like just about any drummer you can imagine.

  • +1 GarageBand.

🤔 will investigate, but wouldn’t that be walled into GB? Whereas I prefer to work in Cubasis.

Yes, you cannot use GB as an AUv3, so if you wanted to use it you’d have to create your own workarounds.

Nailed it. This is IMO the only current option for acoustic drums. Not tried Drumbo though.

Drambo... not Drumbo. Although a "Drumbo" modular drum kit might be kind of cool.

Yes it was a deliberate typo.

I would have expected @Gavinski to have used that one…

  • Acoustic drums apps are the thing I miss most as a traditional songwriter from the desktop world. No question, we need EZ Drummer or similar in iOS. That said, I was recently forced to abandon desktop for a few months and completed a song purely in iOS (discussion here: https://forum.audiob.us/discussion/comment/1174585#Comment_1174585 and used DigiStix 2 for the drums. It worked well in the mix I felt.

  • Definitely been some recent chatter on this.

GarageBand can work, I sometimes export a few virtual Drummer parts, then loop or slice or whatever with the audio file.

Basically what @rs2000 said…using samples, building kits, slicing loops. I made a few well layered drum sample kits in DS2 but it’s tedious and only does a max of 5 velocity layers,

There’s some SFZ presets for drums in Audiolayer, or by loading in all the proper samples from a sample pack to create AL Presets. It can Auto-sample too.

You can also do SoundFonts in something like soundfont au, or bs-16, but they’re not anything amazing. I’m pretty sure SF files are singular, not multilayered or multi-velocity.

Tumbjam is pretty great but IAA

Same with the Lumbeat Apps, with stuff like Jazz Drummer, Reggae Drummer, but they are IAA or meant to work together with the bass app.

Didn't somebody make sth for Drambo called Drumbo recently actually tho!

1 hour after I trademarked the name, someone did, yes.

There are a number of great acoustic drum apps available in 2023. One popular option is the Steven Slate Drums app, which features realistic acoustic drum sounds and is available in both standalone and AUv3 plugin formats. Another great option is Drumagog, which offers customizable drum samples and a user-friendly interface. For those interested in creating their own drum patterns, the Groovebox app provides a range of acoustic drum sounds and a powerful sequencer. Additionally, apps like BeatHawk and DrumComputer offer a variety of acoustic drum kits and samples, as well as advanced features for sequencing and arranging drum patterns.

Bought their acoustic drum pack, and it sounds great... except for the kick, the kick is a few dB quieter than the rest of the pack.

Is there any level control built into the app? Also can the sounds be individually midi triggered by external seq?

Sounds can be triggered by external midi and are velocity sensitive. You can adjust the volume of individual pads. If a kit is loaded in a pad, there isn’t adjustment for the volume of individual parts (other than velocity).

If you are using the beathawk sequencer, you can adjust the velocity of each sequenced note, btw.

I can’t remember - it’s just that the town near Belfast was the first thing that came to mind.

There is no such thing as a Steven Slate Drums app on the app store… but there’s a way to build a custom MIDI controller using the BeatSurfing app on iPad to play the drum samples:
