Drumbo drum processor rack
Inspired by Knock, I decided to try and recreate something similar in Drambo. I’ve called it Drumbo.
Full disclosure, I don’t own knock so I’m guessing a bit, but have tried to recreate each stage it has from watching a couple of demos. I’m pretty pleased with the tunable sub bit!
Here’s a video of it on the Think break:
The bit I’m less pleased with is the ‘punch’ compressor. It could really do with auto gain compensation, but not sure if Drambo can do that?
I’ve attached the file to this thread. Unzip and you’ll find the drmodule which you can load as a processor rack preset.
I’m pretty inexperienced with Drambo, so any suggestions on how each bit could be built better would be appreciated!
Comments
I've changed a few things.
It does need quite some fine tuning to make it work for your drum beat, namely:
Enjoy!
Nice! Was hoping you’d pitch in! 😉
Will have a go with it later. I started with an envelope follower, but switched to a transient detector because of the delay. Thanks for a different solution. Will the sub phase solution add much latency though?
Same with the peaking eq. I just whacked an lp filter in to filter out anything over 40-50hz before it reached the transient detector.
Any thoughts on adding gain compensation to the punch compressor? Or a better way to add ‘punch’?
I’m also trying to get it to as few knobs as possible, like knock.
Just a few ms. If that's still too much, I'd rather sequence sub osc hits on a different track like a normal percussive synth. More reliable and more flexible anyway.
The compressor does a good job adding as much punch as you want - the difficult question is rather what you consider great punch. Too much will destroy dynamics, too little will sound weak. You could try EQing the drum break before going to the compressor and, if even that fails, build a multiband compressor so you can treat bands differently.
Then I'd rather go for the "sequenced sub osc" option. Even Knock won't magically give you what you want on any source material in all cases (except if all you want is nasty distortion )
BTW another very powerful kick (and other) drum enhancer can be build by using a combination of Half Rectify, Peaking EQ, the Modal Resonator (try the "Kettle" model at around 80Hz pitch and Position, Base and Material set to minimum), followed by a 24dB LPF at maybe 170Hz. You won't get that from Knock.
This is as much a technical challenge as anything else. It doesn’t need to work on any material, just seeing if we can do something as simple as knock. Falling back to sequencing a sub manually kinda defeats the point 😉
I’m aiming for as close to 1-2 knob solution as I can to add a degree of punch - for me this is a compressor that misses the transient and has auto gain compensation. Maybe there’s a better way for a generic ‘transient enhancer’ in Drambo? I’m looking for a ‘turn the knob, until it sounds good’ type solutions, or turn it down if now.
See above. This is something to just slap on and tweak to taste. If it doesn’t work on a particular beat, so be it - you can say the same for knock I hear.
Ooh that sounds worth adding in!!
This is a cool project. I'm looking forward to seeing how it evolves.
@rs2000 do you know if there’s an easy way in Drambo to have one knob control multiple other knobs at once? I can see there’s a knobs module but not sure if it’s useful for this?
Edit: not to worry, found the answer in this thread https://www.elektronauts.com/t/drambo-ios/126913/1280
@gregsmith Indeed.
But there's another, more elegant solution: Welcome to morphing with the Morph knob!
By hitting the ASSIGN button and turning any destination knob, you can "remote control" multiple knobs in the exact range that you specified for each knob separately, positive or negative.
Another advantage of morphs is that they work without adding a modulation amount knob next to each destination knob.
And what's even better: Even knobs that don't have a modulation input can be controlled this way.
That’s the one! Thanks dude! 👍
Ok…
I’ve been working on this a bit more and have got to version 0.4
I’ve dropped the idea of simplifying down to a single knob for each process, but I’m trying to keep it as simple as possible to just dial in.
Here’s a video of it in action on a few drum loops:
I’ve attached the Drambo module if anyone wants to have a go. Feedback is very welcome.
@rs2000 thanks for the help with the sub. I’ve simplified it slightly and I’m really happy with the results.
Bruh…this is 🔥
Thanks for this!!!
Glad you like it. Is there anything you think I should add?
