Years ago I worked with the original bass player for Johnny Kidd and the Pirates when he ran a recording studio. He told us that he used to make tape delays on the side to supplement the small income he got from being in the band. Even once products were on the market (and he had been replaced in the band) he still had a business making them as they were really difficult to get in the UK until a few years into the 60s.
