Yes, I’m apped out. Haven’t bought anything in ages and have no plans to. There’s a lot of redundancy in iOS. There are apps that would make me jump back in, but I doubt they ever get made TBH.

I’m curious what those would be. For me it would definitely be more stuff that utilizes the touch screen effectively. With more iOS devs porting to desktop and more desktop ports coming to iOS, this is looking increasingly unlikely, and I’m starting to appreciate many of the old IAA only apps that truly made the platform unique, rather than a desktop clone with some touch control.

☝️ This. Entirely agree. Hence when someone does do something innovative using the touch screen, it’s like a breath of fresh air. Fluss springs to mind.

Yes! And hence (I think I remember this correctly) Bram and Hainbach have no plans to make a desktop version. Fair play!

Samu has mentioned previously that the iOS market needs to expand. More unique iOS apps that truly leverage the capabilities of iOS but are pushed by people like Hainbach with a large desktop / hardware following are the most promising thing I have seen in terms of what will bring more people to iOS. Now we need people like Richard Devine to collab on an iOS app with a dev who understands how to build a great iOS native app. I’m personally not a fan of his stuff, but he has huge reach.

Ok I think I’ve narrowed it down between Phase 84, TB Flowtones , and BLEASS Alpha .

This is a damn addiction. Lol

Personally Phase84 is my favorite of those just for its uniqueness. I believe it’s the only PD app on the store besides the awful Casio app. I do love Bleass Alpha for bread and butter synth stuff though.

No, don't forget Shockwave by Kai Aras!

You’re right! I own that one and somehow always forget about it 😂 I loved it a lot when it first came out. Probably time to revisit it again.

That was another one I was considering at one point but saw quite a few things about it and Volt crashing a lot and I passed on it. I’ve since learned to take app reviews with a grain of salt . Getting Agonizer next month 😎

Out of curiosity, what would be your dream synth? Like if someone with deep pockets and was a coding genius was backing you

  • For me there's more than enough synths and effects on iOS to last for ages but the DAW situation is still a bit lacking...
...that's partly why I spend most of my time on the Mac with Logic and use the iPad as a sound-module...

That’s very easy - a flexible physical modeling synth with great mpe implementation. Basically Plasmonic by Rhizomatic (the guy who made Absynth), but an iOS version.

Fired up Lumbeat’s iBassist, Future Drummer and other instruments driven by iBassist’s midi outputs.. wait, in Audiobus..and AB Remote…

Must say.. there is nothing like it, nowhere, not even desktop..

Can only imagine them in Auv3..

You can actually play iBassist live by editing the ‘sequencer’.. amazing ..

Last year seemed a bit slow for app releases until near the end of the year, and this year, so far, there has already been an incredible number of new releases.

Do you feel you've bought too many apps that you haven't learned? Has your productivity in terms of actual music making, whether just noodling or making finished pieces, waned?

Or does having all these new toys 'spark joy' and spark creativity? Are you enjoying the process of learning and experimenting with new apps satisfying or finding it frustrating?

Or are you, like Samu for example, easily resisting getting new stuff?

Constantly waiting for new apps is not loving music, it's an addiction. Or a disease, call it what you want.

As for me, I have more than enough to make music for the rest of my life and I think the iOS market has come to an end anyway.

Why do you think the iOS market has come to an end?

But yes….addiction in this scene is rife. At least it’s a less costly addiction than modular, but I think most of us need to examine our app-buying habits.

☝️ I’m actually trying out Bitwig with a Push1 after years of 100% iPad. Still wanna avoid the mouse like a plague, but the iOS DAWs and in general getting things to “work” is a bit tiring. Either you can’t automate the auv3 or you need a midi plugin, but that won’t work in that other scenario…
On the other hand everyone seems to be waiting for Logic on iPad like the holy grail salvation. I think it would highly detrimental to the iOS music scene. If there’s already too much of devs working for Apple , Logic would multiply it by 1000. I’m sure Loopy Michael would build the perfect iOS DAW if he had the resources.
Also agree with some of the above comments regarding making creative use of the touch screen. That is definately not happening with DAWs, and Daws are the basics. We have like 200 delays and 800 synths but are still lacking a solid foundation. Drambo and Loopy are 2 good examples of apps that nail it, but IMO we’re missing a “pro” daw that ties it all together. So yes, I’m not that excited about yet another tape sim plugin.

Agreed. That’s part of what made Borderlands and Samplr so amazing and why they’re still 2 of my all time favorites. Fluss did a great job implementing the tangible aspects of iOS production. But BramBos is also primarily an iOS developer now, so I guess that makes sense.

  • I’m not apped out since I’m really new to iOS recording. Thanks to this forum I can read a lot about Apps before I purchase them. And it’s only two by now: Cubasis and TB Equalizer.

    What I am missing?
I’m in need of a deesser but that’s not a big deal.
I’m wondering why there is no general auv3 app for drum replacement (like drumagog in auria) and I miss the function to create MIDI from transients in cubasis (and some more editing features I had back in the days of desktop recording).

There are many many apps out there. I didn’t expect that when I started. I’m just trying to get an overview. 😅

Are you looking more for effects, synths, or drum machines. There are probably hundreds of each haha. I love C3, but I don’t really use the built in synth and drums often. There are a handful of de-essers though.

  • I’m mainly into effects and drum machines (but especially real drums). Didn’t find anything which fits my needs/wishes but the app situation seems very fast changing to me - everyday I find new apps I didn’t know about. :-) would be great to see something like addictive drums on the iPad.

For deessing I will take a deeper look on the 4pockets and the TB sibilance app. Is there any comparison to those apps out there?
