No worries. It was featured on synthtopia.com
Almost forgotten about these. All freeware and some real beauties in there.

That BigRoomKix plugin looks great. What I need is a simple DAW that can host it as an instrument and do basic recording with a sequencer or tracker of some kind. I had Reaper 0.999 (the free one) but I don't think I got that to load the VST's. I had MuLab and Podium Free installed and they gave error messages for VST's like Drumatic 3 or DigiDrums.
Will try the "demo" version of Reaper.
Why not use MultiTrack Studio?

Hmm, yeah, that seems to support VST instruments. I didn't see that one in any of the free host lists I came across. Will try. Thanks!
You can also move projects between iPad and PC version
I would recommend Fxspansion Geist, use standalone or as a vst. You can get it cheap on the KVR marketplace. It was sold for $49 for a few months so lots of people bought.
Heres a jam of mine on geist standalone:
You can get a free lite version on this magazine here, along with a lot of other cutdown software. pretty good deal.

I'm basically an idiot - apparently loading things through my ASIO driver created a new volume bar in Windows 7 for my DAW, and that was turned down. It did take a ton of trial and error just to get to the point where I could actually load VST's, but the problems since then were my own damn stupidity.
I got the demo of Reaper, which is nice, but so far I am liking the MIDI programming functionality of Multitrack Studio quite a bit, as it pertains to programming the VST instruments (the kick drum VST recommended by @thinds above is awesome!).
Controlling with MIDI notes on a piano roll is my primary goal, but I do have an Akai Mini MPK to try out also. Thanks to everyone who made suggestions here. There are endless free VST's out there to mess around with!

Buy a copy of computer music magazine, you'll have more stuff than you'll ever need with each issue. You can buy it on the newsstand app, first month is even free, and you'll be able to download all of the stuff that would come on the DVD of the physical copy. I used their effects a lot on my sessions this summer to do rough mixes before I was able to transfer tracks into auria to mix. A ton of great synths and drum machines too.
Also, I believe Geist has a lite version that is free, and alchemy player never expires. If you own the pro version of alchemy, you got the "taste of camel" sound pack for free for the desktop version, it should be sitting in your account.
Hope that was helpful.
