So, that happened: T.I.A. (Transitory Ischaemic Attack), with BramBos only
Last Friday morning, I had a TIA. Aka, a ‘mini stroke’. A temporary interruption to the oxygen supply in my brain, probably occasioned by a small clot in my heart, in turn caused by the atrial fibrillation I suffer from, which is probably a consequence of my diabetes. Life, eh?
My face was paralysed for half an hour, then passed off. Not serious in themselves, eminently treatable with just aspirin, TIAs can however be harbingers of full-on strokes and, er, death. The highest risk window is in the nine days immediately after having one.
So I spent a little time processing this good news, first with My Charms Are All Overthrown, and now this. A steady beat interrupted by occasional off stage monster roaring. Draw your own conclusions. A sort of marking of the occasion. And, you know, getting some more noises out there while I can. Just in case. I also really need to get my album releasing act together. After all, wouldn’t want all those special moments to just end up lost, like tears in the rain. Would we? Fun fact: the average police officer dies within five years of retirement. I’m just coming up on Year Six…
Prompted by discussion elsewhere on the forum about Ripplemaker, I made this entirely with @BramBos apps: three instances of aforementioned Ripplemaker, Ruismakers Noir and FM, Hammerhead, and on monster wailings, the estimable Mononoke. Sequencing by Ripplemaker, Particles, and Rhythm.

Sorry to hear about that Svetlovska, that must have been scary as hell, and as you say can be a warning sign of a possible future actual stroke. I'm sure you've genned up on whatever it is you can do, if anything, to minimise that, so hopefully nothing further will come of it!
Get well soon, hope it was just a blip!
Don’t know how doctors compare to police officers...
My mom (also diabetes) had one ~1.5 year ago within half year to her retirement... few months later, a stroke left her paralysed on her left side... doctors... worse patients ever...
Try to take good care of yourself, slow down if necessary!
Did you see a doctor? With atrial fibrillation aspirin is not enough to prevent a second event!!!!!
@Gavinski : yup, reading everything in sight, and yup, yes it was. @sevenape : thank you! @0tolerance4silence : sorry to hear about your mum, nothing like a little food for thought. I may never play the guitar again. So: no change there, then.
@Franketti: luckily, I live in the UK, so don’t have to fear seeking medical treatment because of the cost, so I already knew about the atrial fibrillation from the vast battery of medical investigations and medications I have already had for that little issue, and within hours of Friday’s adventure I had had a CT scan and an appointment booked in to the TIA specialist next Tuesday morning, this despite my governments’ determined attempts, for the benefit of their shareholders, sorry, supporters, to break the will of the NHS and force us down the road to Hell that is US health ‘care’ . Total cost to me so far, and going forward? Well, I must confess I was a little shocked at the price of a coffee from the A&E vending machine…
Goodness. Be well. I hope you will receive all the care and support you need to. I know all too well how challenging it is to navigate the NHS services these days, yet through my time as a cancer patient here in the UK, I have received faultless care and support. May you be blessed with the same. x
Firstly - look after yourself! Sorry to hear about the health scare, so please take it easy and follow medical advice. I grew up in the UK, so know that there’s a fantastic and free health system, so I hope you’re taking full advantage of it (take a thermos of coffee next time maybe).
Secondly - that track has a really bouncy and fun feel to it. I was quite surprised, as I thought with a health scare it might me melancholy or darker. I could even tap my foot along to it!
Eeek, that’s scary. Hope the scan turns out OK and the treatment(s) work well.
And I agree with @michael_m the track itself is surprisingly jolly in the circs.
Scary but I admire your resolve and good humor. Thinking positive thoughts for you and enjoying this piece of music. So yes, release more songs and care for yourself and pay no attention to statistics. I mean, you’re hardly an average police officer, no?!
Scary...take care!
That’s scary S. I hope it all works out and won’t recur.
Love the song! Be well!
No Pockets In A Shroud Dept.
Thanks all for your comments and well-wishes. As the skydiver with the failed chute said as they plummeted to the Earth: ‘So far, so good.’
With that in mind, I had been humming and hawing over a few things. So I thought, ‘fuck it’, cashed in some long time savings and…
This arrives tomorrow:
If I’m going out, I’m going out weird and noisy.
These both look cool! What are they lol, can't see the name of the 2nd one in particular. I must also be feeling intimations of mortality, as I've been on a bit of a splurge recently in terms of buying stuff that I can't really afford 😁
Oh, my...
The first is the Behringer ARP 2600 ‘Blue Marvin’, aka the BARP (the one with the real spring reverb); the second is a Lyra 8, in Soviet era test equipment green, for maximum Saint Hainbach vibes.
Bram’s Mononoke is the nearest thing to it in app form, but not really…
Since I don’t actually play anything, I figured an instrument like the Lyra that actively resists being played in any normal sense would be a good fit for me. I might even one day stretch far enough to reach a Pulsar 23 to go with it, any future brain farts permitting, as that is a drum machine which only optionally keeps time. Thus reminding me all too well of my own experience of being a ‘drummer’ , in air quotes, back in the day…
Have to say the BARP, which I’m calling the Blue Meanie
even though officially it is the grey version which is the meanie - is a remarkable synth.
It is very inspiring, more ‘modular’ than ‘semi’, and the slider based control surface actively encourages wibbling about in a different way from my Neutron or modular rack. Frankly a steal at £417 new from Anderson’s, less than some individual modules out there. I sprung another £65 inc shipping for the Tolex case for it, which also strikes me as a bargain price, from this guy: www.customsynth.co.uk
It sounds fantastic too, and the spring reverb gives it instant Radiophonic Workshop flavour. I spent over an hour yesterday just grooving to a kind of deep bass drum/cavern of hell boom pattern sort-of sequenced from my MonoStation I somehow came up with, while I manually rode the filter and resonance sliders. Gonna take a loop of that back to the iPad and see what develops this morning. Carpe Diem and all that…
Oh yeah, I see now it is the lyra 8 - I didn’t know they came in that color! Wild…I’ll be very interested to hear how you feel it compares to Mononoke, which of course is inspired by it. Soma Labs is a very interesting dev, that Pulsar drum module looks incredible too, as you said. Maybe save that one as a treat for your next emergency though (and hoping that won’t be any time soon)! The Lyra should keep you entertained for a while!!
Indeed! I’ve just moved my studio from the skylight-only attic to a room with a view of the garden, and just figuring out how to plug everything in again will take me long enough!
Incidentally: isn’t the leader of the Blue Meanies a totally fab creation? With their soft gender-indeterminate insinuating voice, lipsticked lips and - interesting - costume choices, I like to think of them as an early trans role model. Always did love a good villain…
And I am really looking forward to hearing what you do with the arp 2600. Seems Behringer actually improved on the original
God bless you!
So sorry to hear of the event @Svetlovska and glad to hear your positive wit intact after.
Cheering you on for the Lyra and 2600 both of which look like the kind of “medical equipment” that heals us.
Very sorry to hear about your recent TIA @Svetlovska . I certainly hope you are not “on the way out” just yet! Enjoy your new gear and continue to make music while the sun shines (metaphorically, probably!) for a considerable time to come!
Really looking forward to hearing what you can do with these two, and +1 for it being interesting to hear your thoughts on Lyra-8 vs Mononoke.
Did you see the recent Modular World Pulsar-23 special? Not that I’m trying to pump up the GAS (badoom-tish!) or anything…
Sorry to hear about your close call with a stroke, thankfully temporary.
Maybe you should use them to compose your own requiem…
Really sorry to hear about the TIA but very pleased that your creative juices are intact.
Sometimes it takes things like this to give yourself a kick up the arse and do the things you’ve always wanted to do!
The NHS when it works well is a beautiful thing… take it easy 🙏
Blessings and healing your way. Enjoyed the going out weird and noisy part! Cheers to that attitude! I hope to do the same.
Hope you are feeling better soon, love the Tolex case, may have to get one for my Gray Meanie.
