There are users that don’t have AUM and that’s pretty much the best use case for an app that configures orchestral sections in a standalone (or AUv3) instance. It makes some clever decisions based upon note velocity to create an instant mix. Is it worth $20 for the typical ABF reader? Not if they have an SF2 player that can load MusicScore or other SF2 orchestras and multi-channel playback like KQ Sampei, etc. But set up in KQ Sampei has to be built by hand.
If you just want a nice target to cycle through Piano Motifs output to find one to build from them this is a good option for someone trying to maximize their budget.
Maybe some should flag this app for future sales events. What is the right price point for you to hit the BUY button?
I think $20 is a good price but the IAP in module for the orchestral expansion is also only $20 and based on my trial run it sounds great. How would you compare the sound of the 2 if you’ve used it?
As far as other apps, I have BS-16, Taqsim, some other SF2 players, Module (without IAPs), Thumbjam, and apps like iM1 that have orchestra sounds that are useable. Would it bring anything extra? It does seem like it takes up less space than the Module expansion.
What is MusicScore? I did a search and only found MuseScore.
Interesting industry story.
Sorry… It is indeed MuseScore. A money guy bought MuseScore and starting collecting music/sound apps looking for synergies: Audacity, StaffPad and MuseScore. The MuseScore 3 app which had an IOS version went open source and came out with a multi-desktop Open Sourced free version called MuseScore 4 which infringes on the StaffPad use cases. In the process the Staffpad creator David Hearns Williams was tasked to create a sound library for the desktop Muse Score 4 product that merged
The staffpad concepts of a sound engine that understood notation details in renderings like Staccato, Legato, Marcato, etc.
So, I’m hope it the Muse Sound set is also released for StaffPad users this year.
MIDI doesn’t provide any assistance standardized articulations which requires swapping in and out multiple sample sets. In a desktop DAW these notation clues get mapped to CC or Parameter details in product by product implementations… no 2 alike.
The details of the MuseScore project is documented in a YouTube video. The details on MIDI shortcomings and a solution are covered starting at 21:30:
OK. Thanks for the info.

If you want to compare the sound (and you have either a PC or Mac computer), you can download a trial version on the GSi website. The sounds should be comparable to the iPad version.
I just mocked up a comparison of MiniOrchestra compared to multiple instances of Module Pro both driven by Piano Motifs. MiniOrchestra just sounds fuller than 3 instances of Module Pro.
I think their idea of channeling MIDI to orchestral sections based on Velocity/Volume really helps include more orchestral sections… the results are just more complex. The default sounds in Module Pro
For orchestra are pretty limited and the IAP called Orchestral Dreams helps on the strings and choir but has no brass options.
The value of MiniOrchestra went up for me after having to hunt through a lot of options to find 3 instruments that made an interesting arrangement. I could have added more Module Pro tracks but the lack of options for brass which MiniOrchestra does well Mande me just stop.
For rapid set up and solid results MiniOrchestra is starting to pay off. Still… watch for sales events. Set a

This is exactly what I needed to hear. Thanks for doing the due diligence here! Mini Orchestra remains at the top of the buy list. It just sounds very lively in the demos you’ve posted. Module sounds good for Module but the GSI app just sounds good all around.
Regarding the price, you might be waiting a long time for a sale. GSi has very few sales and they tend to lower the price by only $2 or $3. Their best sales are when they bundle 2 or more apps together which can save you $8 - $10 (assuming you want both apps). For example, their new Red Animal and Compact DeLuxe organs have never been on sale (they cost $15 each, USD), but you can get both for $20.
Good point. GSi is the software division of a hardware Keyboard Company that makes the Crumar Mojo 61 synth. They create the sampled sounds in the Mojo and also package their sound collection into some IOS apps.
I do have a $10 per app rule so the bundle you mentioned hits my purchase criteria where I surrender to the opportunity.
I did that with their delays bundle. Really good deal.
Best AUv3 purchase yet. Totally worth the $20! I wish I knew this was being released because I bought iSymphonic the day before this came out and I didn’t even notice it until this week! Anyway, just a new member sharing how awesome this app is since it just came out and i just joined, so it’s relevant I hope.
Welcome to the forum!
Thank you @Gavinski
Welcome! Glad you’re liking it. It’s pretty high on my list of apps to buy. How does it compare to iSymphonic?
@HotStrange Dude, it is no comparison. It is everything iSymphonic seems and pretends it should be from demos. See iSymphonic is simply a base app. You buy it for $10, but it doesn’t get usefully good until you start the rabbit hole of Crudebyte IAP, which are ridiculously high, from $10-30. By the time you finish with iSymphonic, you have to spend a minimum of I would say triple to quadruple what you get right out of the box with Mini Orchestra.
You have no idea how terribly annoyed I was to see that I literally missed the release by one day. I was searching for “symphony auv3” and “orchestra auv3” the day before. Nothing came up besides iSymphonic, swam, and one or two other synthesizer apps, but I went searching a few days/weeks later, saw it, couldn’t believe it, and then found that someone took the plunge here. After I saw the demo I had to buy it.
That was a very long winded way of saying I did an exhaustive comparison, and GSi knocked it out of the park with this one. I absolutely love the interface, the studio presets are pretty nice, and then you can of course make the presets you like, and the cool part is if you have more than one instance, you basically have a full orchestra which you don’t have with iSymphonic which honestly sounds like its either one instrument, all instruments, or you can’t tell what instrument is being sampled to me.
To me the $11 to waste it on iSymphonic was all I needed to never look for another symphonic/orchestral auv3 again. I really can’t tell you how pleased I am with the sounds it produces. Just beautifully done.
Thanks a ton for this! Definitely not interested in spending $50+ on IAPs so that’s really helpful. I really like the IAPs within Korg Module as well but I really want an all in one solution for these kinds of sounds and the GSI app seems perfect for what I want. And based on the demos is really sounds great.
I won’t use it enough to justify more than a $20 purchase so it’s kinda perfect for me.
Same here dude. Checked all the boxes and was $19.99 - which is what I had in my account balance lol perfect
Go for it!
Anyone confirm that this app is using Soundsfonts in a simple yet lovely wrapper. I’ve got no problem paying 20 bucks for a developer reinventing the wheel for a better user experience I’m just wondering if the audio quality is derived from Soundfonts?
(I dont know or what soundfonts in a wrapper means, but it makes iSymphonic sound like child’s play and a rip off. [if that helps]) like if you mean is it worth it? Absolutely, and definitely if iSymphonic was of interest to you.
This developer is the software side of a Hardware Synth company called Crumar: maker of the Crumar Dojo and some organ style keyboards. They make their own samples for their hardware and for this MiniOrchestra Product. They also have a Piano/Keyboard software app for around $30.
The magic of MiniOrchestra is that they make instruments to Velocity ranges: if you input soft/low velocity notes it might target only the woodwinds but when you cross some threshold the brass kicks in. These decisions can also be designed by the user to make a Preset that produces a custom “Orchestra Mix”. It comes with 6 Presets and for the same inputs it sounds radically different for each.
I’m glad there are people that see the $20 purchase cost as a bargain compared to the sample IAP products like BeatHawk, etc. The samples in BeatHawk are larger and do sound better but after you mix 5-6 choices to duplicate a complex orchestral config it’s more work for pretty similar results. GSi really optimizes the size of the samples for a reasonable result in a complex mix as you might expect from a hardware company where the cost of RAM dominates as a cost of goods.
Not to derail the thread but I’m curious, which Beathawk IAPs are your favorite? I’ve been using it a lot more lately and there are a ton I’m interested in. The sound quality makes Beathawk a killer groovebox.
Awesome share. Great info. You know my friend said to me that Beathawks IAP (3 of them, woodwind, orchestra, and strings?) are pretty great for the price. Especially with beathawk being on sale for $5 and IAP are all 50% off for 10 days just to throw that out there
I say If you have the funds get both and compare. @HotStrange
That’s the only way I was satisfied with Mini Orchestra (comparing it to isymphonic).
Thanks @McD for the explanation, I see the the value for sure.
Didn’t realize they were on sale. Do you know what day the sell ends? Definitely gonna try and get those IAPs and see how it works for me.
I think the 23 but don’t wait on my account lol if I recall right
Just picked this up on sale as I've often felt that a realistic & playable orchestra / string section was a glaring hole in my iOS library. Oh my goodness: it sounds amazing! Also very fun to play, either on its own or layered with a piano, synth, anything. Both the strings and brass sound so nice. Best money I've spent in awhile.
I also just pulled the trigger and purchased it for $15 USD. It is a brilliant design. I love that you can select different orchestra sections and trigger them based on key velocity ranges. You can also trigger certain expression parameters based on aftertouch. I know that this can be achieved with other apps too (e.g. AudioLayer), but this app is very easy to configure and the instruments sound great. I also purchased their SoloTrumpet as a nice alternative to SWAM (it has a great flugelhorn preset).
Is there a staccato/pizzicato articulation for string instruments? I saw several YT videos and reviewers didn't mentioned it.
