Pray For Strangers

A few weeks ago I found some old notebooks of staff paper with some sketches that I wrote decades ago. Before MIDI. I punched them into the piano roll editor, added a few bits, and ended up with this. It's a bit amateurish, but it's not bad.

  • I’m not hearing anything amateurish. I’d be curious to hear how this would have sounded had you recorded it back when you first set it down on staff paper.
The opening is my favorite part. It’s good throughout but the piano at the beginning really grabs me. I’m glad you decided to return to it at the end.

The first four measures are what I wrote down. Imagine a Fender Rhodes playing thru a cheap amp from K-Mart. That’s then recorded onto a cheap Panasonic cassette recorder with the mic that it came with. It’s probably on one of the cassettes in the box. I don’t have a cassette player, though. If I ever run out of ideas, I have a stack in the box. 90% of it sucks, but there are a few things that don’t. I just thought, that cassette player might be in one of the other boxes. I’ll check it out… one of these days.

I’m glad you liked the original stuff. All the rest, vocals, bass, background noises, are all just filler to get to about three minutes in duration. I used Pure Piano instead of a Rhodes. I tried the Rhodes but the acoustic sounded better to me. It’s hard to believe that we have all of this capability in a device no bigger than a pad of paper. Me and my friends had mountains of gear back in the day. When I played bass I had an Ampeg stack that was almost 7 feet tall. How times have changed.

I’m looking forward to more collaborations in the future. I’m proud to be a part of it.

  • That word amateur means someone that does something for the love of it… that’s a positive.

But regarding the quality of this effort. It’s a nice contrast to your other work… in fact that’s your overarching strength.
You don’t repeat yourself but you dig a new tunable each time you start digging.

Thank you for reminding me of that. You are absolutely right.

I try to do different things with each post. I'm not always successful, but I'm trying. My wife tells me all the time... I'm very trying. I wish I had more time to spend on the forum. Work has become hectic. The available work is starting to dry up, and everybody is cutting prices to keep the lights on. It seems like the jobs go to the hungriest, or those who made the biggest mistake when bidding on projects. We are considered "high end" in the industry, but people appear to be willing to accept less than the best lately, if they can save a few bucks. I miss the good old days, even if they were only a few years ago.

Thank you for the uplifting words. You made my day!

  • I sometimes envy people who can record their musical ideas on a staff so it can be played at a later date, even by others who read music.
I really enjoyed this piece too!

If I recall correctly, I just wrote it down as I was playing it. Who knew I would come back and finish it over 40 years later!
    Have a great day!

Thank you for taking time to listen to my rambling. I have to agree with @McD about the definition of amateur. In that respect, I am an amateur in every sense of the word. I am also just an old hippie from the 70s. The title for this comes from one of my wife’s lady friends from church. I think that’s a good thing. What harm can it do, after all? Let’s all pray for each other. Peace and joy my brother!

  • Lovely track Paul, especially the section from 2:13 to the end.
Nothing wrong with old hippies from the 70s ✌️

Thanks Tony. The 70s and 80s were definitely good times. Good music, less politics, cool cars, no social media.
