First outing with BARP & Lyra hardware: Pixies, Sprites and Jets
In 2015, astronaut Andreas Mogensen captured the first video of Pixies, Sprites, and Jets - strange, coloured electrical discharges in the upper atmosphere. Believed linked to the electromagnetic Schumann Resonances at the Earth’s core, and, possibly, to earthquakes, what exactly they are and how they are formed currently is a mystery.
Video of the real thing here: https://www.space.com/35691-weird-blue-jets-from-space-video.html
Bit of an unusual one for me - played and recorded live, no sequencers involved, in two passes from yer actual hardware onto my Tascam Model 12, firstly the doom drum from the Behringer ARP clone, aka the BARP, and then, er, a kind of improvisation, I guess, from the Lyra 8 on ghostly wails, plane noises, and things going overdrive in the night. Fair to say I had no idea what I was doing with either. I have much to learn…
I took the Tascam wav files into AUM and recorded the final mix there, for ease of uploading. No instrument apps used, and minimal post fx inside AUM. The reverbs all went down live as I recorded it from the Blue Marvin BARP spring and my Modular’s FX Aid Pro.
Incidentally, my non-expert view, for those interested, is that the Lyra 8 is definitively not Mononoke in hardware form. I love that app, and I guess (?) the Lyra was a big influence on it’s design. And, yes, there is some correspondence in the cross-interactivity you achieve when holding down multiple triggers at once.
But the Lyra is some kind of wild untameable beast by comparison, roaring and wailing and generally going off on one in so-far, to me at least, completely unpredictable tangents. I think I’m in love…

God I love getting a new synth and just hitting record for the first time and going wild. Always get awesome stuff. It’s magical. I really enjoyed your version of this.
Excellent work, really enjoyed especially from the approx 2 min mark.
Yup! It sounds like some kind of air raid is going on but I like it!
Nice, even on my phone I can feel the high atmospheric mood…
Very enjoyable! Especially, as others said, from around the 2.15 mark. I can just imagine how beautiful those lyra triggers are to play with. Probably a deeper experience than anything on a touch screen can be.
Not to feed your gas but did you see the Andrew Huang video on the limited edition Pulsar module he was involved in making? Sexy as hell...Alligator clips allowing for more connections than the usual modular wires. Bram please make us an ipad version!
My intuition tells me you might need one of these to stave off any future health alerts Irena. Doctors orders!
Well said Dr Gav
More great noises, as I’ve come to expect from you.
BTW, I own a Lyra and I live in fear that some night it will rise up and kill me whilst I sleep.
Some entirely justified purchases behind this one, and a great showcase for your style.
Sounds great! The Lyra seems like an amazing instrument. What’s the closest thing in iOS? Mononoke?
I really liked the sound of my BARP but after 2 defective ones back to back, I gave up on it. How’s yours treating you?
This is super cinematic, and I can imagine this soundtrack in a space trek!
The action is non-stop, and so aggressively captivating, like pulling me out of my seat!!!
You are a very powerful creator, and I am digging this production!!!
Yes mononoke - I actually wish mononoke was not so inspired by lyra to the point of having a hobbled mpe implementation as a result. I know Bram had his reasons for the way he implemented this, but I can't say I agree with them. I would still really like to just be able to play any note on any octave in mononoke using an mpe keyboard, and I know that many others share that view.
Sounds great and fits perfectly the topic you chose.
"...Fair to say I had no idea what I was doing with either..." 😂 Given the result and all your past releases, I don't think it has anything to do with beginner's luck.
Ah I didn’t realize that. I guess I don’t use MPE enough to have noticed. It’s something I do wanna get into more. I’m currently researching MPE controllers on iOS if you have any recommendations!
Maybe Woodtroller? Beat Pads is getting an update to have velocity responsiveness on the pads, haven't checked that yet. Velocity keyboard is pretty nice, though you definitely need to put it on a cushion or something to get the best out of it. KB-1 I ended up not really liking for mpe stuff, but can't remember why, long time since I used it. For monophonic instruments like the Swam packs, Geoshred is my favourite by a country mile.
Probably worth giving Beat Pads a go first, as it is extremely cheap and some of the others, like Woodtroller, are fairly pricy in comparison.
Also Beat Pads dev and Woodtroller are currently both very active in terms of implementing user feedback, which goes in their favour. If you have a feature request of some kind, those 2 devs would likely implement it if it is feasible and useful.
Cool!
Sounds like you’ve had your money’s worth already with those purchases!
Wonderful stuff, and thank you for confirming that the Lyra-8 is way more out of control than Mononoke. Though that puts it back on my GAS list…
Yeah I’ve been putting the Lyra to the back of my mind as it’s probably more my thing than my Strega, might have to put some stuff up for sale or trade first though…
Lots of things happening, could have been a bit of a mess but it all came together very nicely… another great title / topic as well 👍
