PG-13 - Lady App-titude
A little one-minute thing I did a couple of years ago using PG-8X, a FREE software emulation of the 80s classic Roland JX-8P synth. All sounds come from this one synth (except drums). This is one of my favorite synths of all time, and I created this track within minutes of first discovering it.

That's a really nice, funky track. I love what you did. Maybe I've been under a rock, but is PG-8X available for iPad?
Is this the one?

Thanks mate that looks like the one. Looks like desktop/laptop only (at least for now). I just love the way it sounds. Not sure if there are any apps on iOS/iPadOS that have "that sound". Or maybe I'm late to the game (wouldn't be my first time lol).
It's desktop only and VST only. Unfortunately, it hasn't been updated in ages and won't work on most current operating systems. After several years without an update the developer posted a couple of months ago on forums that he might be working on it again, so I'm hoping it will someday rise again.
The coolest thing about it is that it reads actual legacy JX-8P patch sysex. It's one of the best vintage synth recreations ever.
I have loved this synth forever, and am so grateful this VST exists, and does such a good job at getting that very distinctive tone. I wish upon a star that we could get an app.
I reckon I shouldn't spend more than a minute on my tracks!
Nice to hear it again @Lady_App_titude 😊
Could've been a demo tune on the original JX-8P minus the drums... oh wait... it wasn't multi-timbral, was it? 😄
It's always worth keeping an old Windows laptop for this one, and maybe SQ8L too.

Both the PG8X and SQ8L are two of the best freebies of vintage gear out there, obviously with the caveat that they are also showing their age with regards to compatibility with modern setups, although for SQ80 full emulation you really need a poly-aftertouch keyboard to experience the cross wave modulation.
Wow! That was great, @Lady_App_titude ! Totally captured the sound and vibe of that era of synth!
Definitely captures the era, and it definitely sounds good, free or otherwise. Nicely put together track too!
Thanks so much! It's a shame this VST appears to be all but abandoned. There was a post from the developer on the KVR forum back in January that he might be in a position to try to work on it again in his spare time, but ...
I would say the only sure bet is to track down the original hardware, but quite expensive, and old hardware comes with its own set of risks. Too bad Roland has never seen fit to reissue anything that can read the legacy patch sysex. Their Roland Boutique JX-08 was their half-baked effort. Fun for what it is, but no substitute for the original.
Great track… you have a very distinctive voice… TOO SHORT !
I remember that commercial!
Thanks! Yes, a promising beginning. I had planned to expand it to a full track at one point, but when I upgraded my DAW and OS, it broke PG-8X. It's been several years since then and the developer has never updated it. He even made it open source and there was talk that a third party was going to take it over, but then a year or more went by and that never happened. Then earlier this year the original developer dropped some hints he might try to revive it, but ... Basically, despite lot's of desire and praise and wishes, it's just something that is a freebie side project for him that will only happen if he ever has the spare time.
Just when it was building up some steam!
