Music theory

As we no longer have an Off Topic section, the previous discussion is no longer appearing on the forum start page, so though it easier to start a new thread.

I’m sure there are a lot of things that we could discuss, and as there is a lot of knowledge here, provide answers to questions for anyone who is still learning.

  • I wasn’t sure what category to use for this, so perhaps the location of this needs a moderator fix.

That explains why I can’t find it

This makes me think – why not have an actual “Music theory” section on the site, where little chunks of it can be discussed, taught, argued, denied, etc

By breaking it down into facets, some of this section would become on topic as it relates to apps and the way we use iOS music apps to make music – it’d always be lovely to glue music theory learning to an app we can actually try the stuff out on, and compare across apps etc, so it’s not really as off-topic as first thought

The original thread is still here, as is the browsable category; they just don't show up in the Home list. I don't know whether it's possible for the OP (@tahiche) to move it to a different category (edit: apparently not); it was a great thread that's still getting posts.

Indeed that turned into a very interesting discussion. @u0421793 ☝️here had some stellar moments, big fan. I hope the movement to create a music theory based on emojis gets a following! 🤟🙋🏻‍♂️

  • Being a forum moderator is the pits, but in my opinion, we need something more targeted to replace it. Music Theory may not be broad enough.

I like that idea. Would definitely have to be broader than just dry, academic discussion, but it would certainly fill a gap that I can see.

Maybe something like a “Composition and Theory” section?

Yep, and slanted toward education (because that’s where it’d be of value, rather than just passive discussion)

I’m sure there are a lot of people here who would be glad to answer any questions for anyone looking to advance their knowledge.

  • @michael_m Hi Micheal, I have created a new category called Other Music Content
I have now moved this thread to that, thanks for the feedback😊

Why the link to off-topic tab was moved from the right menu? Is it a permanent change or just a temporary? Although we can still get there by around (Categories -> scroll the page -> off-topic) instead of directly click, the link in the short menu was more convenient IMO.

Creating a new categories focused on more specific issues is a good idea. Is it maybe about creating a few more targeted categories and moving all the threads from off-topic to the new tabs? If yes, then it's a admirable task, but also a Sisyphean work with such a big number of entries (5.4K threads).

That’s great. I didn’t know what category was most appropriate when I created the thread, but that definitely makes sense.
