New Forum Rules - Where Would This Fit?

A question re new forum rules … alongside its main function as a music forum, forum members sometimes reach out when going through hard times and needing to talk about things, and its been great to see other members gathering round and offering support.

I hope the forum can continue to offer a place for this, otherwise I fear something important will be lost.

Where should this appear in the new forum structure, assuming it is still welcome?

Im sure the consensus here would be that there should be space for this, especially when members reaching out are usually making useful contributions to the music conversations otherwise but it’s really up to the forum provider to set the tone I guess.

Amy thoughts anyone? @Michael, @CapnWillie @thesoundtestroom & other mods?

  • @craftycurate @MichaelTyson @CapnWillie I hear what you saying, this is tough one, but the new rules are pretty clear.
    Music content only.
But, honestly, let me think about this and I’ll see what we can come up with, because I do think that members do sometimes need help and support of a personal nature and this may be the only place they can get that support.
I’ve seen many posts like that over the years that have turned into some people being aggressive or rude to the OP and that doesn’t help anyone.

The problem being is that the forum has become so big that it kind of became a free-for-all for anyone and everything, this is one of the reasons the new stuff has been implemented.

    Yes.

The new rules have only been in place for 5 minutes. Why don't we just stick to music for a while and see how that goes.

Thanks Doug ... I'm sure we all appreciate the need to rein things in a bit and keep the musical focus, and also that some threads have sometimes gone a bit sour. But I have also seen many threads where the OP has been helped a lot but the vocal support, and sometimes it's good to talk, and find a bit of humanity and I'd hate to see us pull the plug on that possibility just because of the bad stuff.

  • DMs? You can DM up to 50 people.

  • If you need to have support or just communicate add your request to a music related comment requesting DM’s. No rules broken and yet you can connect to a support community.

The Direct Message feature of this forum has been a wonderful feature for building lasting friendships
And most often around some app or hardware issue but sometimes it’s around healthcare support or end of life updates.

  • My DMs are always open for those who need someone to listen to them. ❤️ Cheers mates.

  • One of the rules that I feel should be enforced and required is that when users report issues with apps to allways mention the Device Model, iOS/iPadOS and app versions they are running.

This will increase the likelihood for better answer and also ease troubleshooting which in most cases results in a solution for the issue. (It's classic troubleshooting really, the more source material there is to work with the easier the task becomes).

Personally I keep all my apps up-to-date and iOS/iPadOS version at the latest device supported version but no beta OS.
Those who know me know I'm can get pretty vocal when/if things break or sh*t simply doesn't work...
...if things work for me I keep quiet.

I enjoy the slightly off-topic app related threads as they are a good source for what users look for and I try to collect most of the goodies and forward to the developers which in the end will benefit all users.

If things get too strict around here I'll just wave bye bye...

    Cheers!

  • @Samu, for everything you post Sam it’s not going to be a problem there are enough categories here to cover everything music based.
Not everybody will know all the technical information about the device etc like you do and for some this could become confusing.
The new rules are solely here to keep everything music based and to prevent unnecessary and argumentative comments that have nothing to do with music

    Cheers Jo 👍

At least I hope they know what device they are using to make music with?!
A trip to Settings -> General -> About is all that is needed before posting about the 'issue' :sunglasses:

Many newer (or freshly updated) apps work best with the most recent iOS versions and can cause issues when run on older iOS versions due to bugs in the operating system that have been solved with recent updates.

Older apps may have issues with recent iOS versions but most 'well written' apps (ie. not using too many work-around hacks) just work. If they have not been updated in ages it's most likely because they have been 'abandoned' and in that case it's best to look for an alternative.

The likelihood of every single developer visiting this form is very small...

I know it can 'feel good' to vent about issues with apps but the absolutely best way is to get in touch with the developers and maybe even point them to a thread where the issues is being discussed.

Sometimes I feel like 'Manuel' from Fawlty Towers, I know naaaaaathing...

    Cheers!

  • I think it’s a valid point. I can think of a several people who seem to have genuinely benefited from support being given here on the forum. It would be a shame to lose that because of some knobheads.

Certain categories should be out of bounds- like politics. I think there should be some rules - but banning everything except iOS music talk seems too far for my liking. I mean really? Is it not more of a community groove than just a forum. I get quite enough control from the British Government to do me for now.

Maybe we should be more pro active in flagging, warning and banning abusers.

Before all that kicks in I was just learning the other day that there is 400 billion stars in our galaxy…. and there is TWO THOUSAND BILLION known galaxies of roughly the same size (I put that in capitals to help you picture the scale) and that’s only the ones we know about 😯

@robosardine Great points, everyone should be more proactive when it comes to flagging comments, this is definitely the best way to get results.
Also feel free to DM us with any concerns you may have.

I do want to point out though that this forum is for all music related content, not just iOS, just that since this is the AudioBus Forum the focus is on iOS.
    Cheers

Well put ... this captures the essence and core message of my OP in a more succinct way. There definitely is a community vibe on here, more than most online forums, precisely because our interactions are not limited to music-related matters.

Also, I completely understand the fatigue of dealing with unruly behaviour and wayward threads, and wanting to nuke it all in one blow by clamping down, but will restricting topics really address the root of the problem?

Sure it will avoid some contentious issues and deal with some of the aggro, which is fair enough, but it isn't just Off-Topic threads that get nasty – what about issues that arise in threads that began "on topic"?

Maybe we should be more pro active in flagging, warning and banning abusers.

    Certainly worth considering!

This is an excellent idea, DMs are a great way to get help and support, but as @McD points out, if you need help of a personal nature then posting anywhere will get noticed and won’t be breaking any rules.

    Cheers

  • It's not that often that I disagree with @Samu, but -

A rule about including OS version and hardware when asking is not needed. The vast majority of problems are unrelated to either. It takes a simple one-line question to ask for it if the answer might depend on it.

The first rule of trying to help someone is to determine the best questions to ask if further info is needed.

On the other hand, if there really is a confirmed problem with an app related to either of those, of course it’s important when reporting to the developer. But again, that’s just common sense. We don’t need rules for that.

Ok then, from now on I will NOT answer a single app related issue unless enough information is provided. Follow up questions just cause un-needed delays and wastes time…

The basic formulation for an issues simple. I’m trying to do this and that on my x-device using this and that app and it doesn’t work as expected. I’ve already tried this and that…

I mean how hard can it be? We’re not ‘mind readers’ or?

    Nobody has proposed that.

Re-read Michael's "Welcome" message and you'll see he says "This community is all about making music, with a focus on the iOS music world. Please keep all content related to music and music-making."

    Not hard to understand.

Michael has specified what the Forum is about - music and music making.

    We should respect that.

If you want a forum about cake baking, sex, politics, war, climate change, fishing, philosophy, Lego or those small, black, round, rubber things you sometimes find in the corners of budgie cages then go to another forum or, even better, make your own.

I imagine there are lots of free & easy "forum making" tools on the net that would allow you to do that. And you can talk about whatever you want. The sky is the limit.

It would probably be better than talking about that stuff here, because the only people on the new site would be people who are actually interested in that stuff. You wouldn't be annoying anyone else.

And neither are you… though you may wish to dispute that.

  • Would this forum allow discussions about receiving a check for the REPLACEMENT DEVICE LAWSUIT since most of us here own devices related to this class action lawsuit?

Only if you use the replacement device check to temporarily assuage your GAS.

The REPLACEMENT DEVICE LAWSUIT check is $14.95. I guess I can buy an app or two,ha. I wonder if anyone here also received this check?
