Remind me what that is? Is it the seaboard block plus the drums pad thing plus the looper thing?
If so, and if you're using ios, I would say don't buy. Those controller blocks only work with the Roli app standalone, or with equator on desktop. They are basically a gimmick and a total waste of money imo. I bought those controller blocks from the app store and returned them within a few days once I discovered the limitations.
The drum pad thing is also not a great way to use mpe because you can't do large glides (pitch changes on x axis) with it. I'd say just buy a seaboard block, forget about the other stuff. And don't buy two, even though it will give you more range. Using two together often leads to stuck notes. Roli themselves admitted this to me in personal correspondence. And by the way, their support sucks ass. They take forever to get back to you, like often several weeks.
Buy one seaboard block and get the 3rd party 'Block Dashboard' app that allows you to change the responsiveness of your block on iOS. Or just get the new seaboard rise, though it is very expensive. Or go for a linnstrument, but I hear people complaining about the velocity response on that.
One more thing - the IAPs on the Roli app are basically an equator rompler and a massive waste of money. You also wouldn't be able to use the Swam purchases in this in auv3 form, just in Roli's app. And that app is one of the most ridiculous things I've ever seen on the app store. For example, you can't use several instances of the same sound in their song building process.
Roli had a great product but took it in a bad direction. Roger Linn is certainly far more deserving of your money! That said, I really enjoy the squishy feel of the seaboard block. If that resonates with you, get one, but don't waste your money on the songmaker kit 😁
Thanks for the fast answer.
The songmaker kit is a Seaboard Block, Lightpad Block and the Live Loop Block. The price for it is around 400. When i look for a seaboard block they are all around 300.
So with the seaboard block you can use other apps, like swam, as well right?
I bought the songmaker kit for a relative bargain (£250 new) and no regrets whatsoever. The Loop block does send out midi cc, so you can use it for other stuff. Roli's app is still good fun to make music with and all the blocks offer useful functionality with Roli Studio on desktop. I think @Gavinski you were a bit unnecessarily damning in your response, I wouldn't call a transport controller a gimmick, really handy when recording. Integrates well natively with GarageBand and Zenbeats as well. If you can get it for a good price I would definitely recommend the songmaker set of blocks - even for an extra 100.
Thanks very much
I guess i‘ll try it and if i have no use of the lightpad and loop block i still can sell it
Yes, go for it I reckon - I went the other way and bought a second hand lightpad first, loved that, so sold it and upgraded. Resale prices holding up well too. I don’t use it all the time in my setup, but whenever I go back to it it’s always inspiring.
Speaking of, just nabbed a Roli Seaboard, excellent condition in the box with all documentation, at Guitar Center this morning! I have been wanting one forever… snapped my Lightpad onto it, off to SWAM 😍
Congrats, have fun
Thank you 🙏🏻
Does it work with Garageband (or FarageBand as a recent 4pockets update calls it 😂)? I stand corrected! Still definitely not remotely worth the original retail price in my opinion, and the same goes for the other 2 utility blocks. But for £250 for the songmaker kit you definitely got a bargain.
And Zenbeats was a nice surprise, I don’t think I ever saw that documented anywhere.
So i bought the songmaker kit and it worked fine on the ipad, but when i tried it with my mac i had some problems. At some point the notes got stuck (with the seaboard). Tried with surge xt and also with the roli software. Does this happen to you too?
Try it plugged in with USB cable. I remember having problems long ago with GarageBand on Mac via Bluetooth. Things were ok by using cable rather than Bluetooth.
More recently I was using all the blocks happily together for Roli Studio in Ableton with no problems… but I can’t remember if I had it plugged in or not.
I had one brief instance when the notes got stuck on the Seaboard using Shoom on iOS. I closed the app and no problem since. I will try on desktop later and see what happens.
That happened connected with the usb
Maybe the problem is the M1
I have an M1 iPad, overall very stable.
Are notes hanging all the time on your MacBook?
…oh, did you try updating the firmware?
I noticed that was an issue posted on message boards after a previous firmware update.
Firmware is updated. They get stuck after playing a while. I have the feeling it mostly happens when i play chords
Well i contaced the guy and he is willing to take it back, very lucky. So i ordered a striso instead
Stuck notes were a major issue for me with the seaboard blocks to the point I almost stopped using them. When they worked they worked well, but were completely unreliable. I later also got problems with dead zones on the blocks. They certainly didn't get heavily used and barely ever left my apartment, so I can only see these as quality control issues either with firmware or hardware. Such a pity. I'm glad the guy let you return them, you got lucky there at least!
Yeah, really lucky. But i enjoyed playing with it, its a pity i couldnt get it to work properly
I wonder if stuck notes is a problem with Bluetooth MPE in general. I have used many MPE devices, and find notes are stuck much more frequently when using them via Bluetooth.
Interesting - wish I'd known that before I bought 2 Bluetooth seaboard blocks expecting them to work flawlessly over Bluetooth 😅
I read on another board that stuck notes happens over USB from time to time.
The funny thing is with the ipad i used bluetoothband it didnt happen. Maybe because i tried more with the mac
Yeah, Bluetooth connection works surprisingly well with iPad and iPhone.
Other than updating them, I keep forgetting to try my Roli devices with my MacBook 😂
Maybe it is the synth you are playing that gets stuck. Although it happens to me too with the roli noise au in aum. Also animoogZ and model15 are mostly very well behaved with mpe.
When I get a stuck note sometimes I have this mozaic script to release the hanging notes. It is on patchstorage and it is called Abolisher.
Lately it seems to work better since I connect the block and the seaboard separately, instead of together, wich happens when they are snapped together.
Recently I acquired a Hydrasynth Explorer wich works realy wonderfull with the roli songmaker kit.
This month the explorers are on sale in the US.
Thinking of getting another one for my seaboard rise...
