Ryuichi Sakamoto - another master passes
The master, Ryuichi Sakamoto has passed. This is so sad. His music with YMO was revolutionary and the soundtrack to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence is one of my favourite sountracks of all time. His absolute perfection in many genres is something very few can attest to. A man so ahead of his time, he will be sorely missed. RIP Mr Sakamoto.

Oh no 😞
Oh no. I was only just watching his biography, Coda last week. So sad. I loved following him as he wandered around, recording sounds, indoors and out, his thoughts on music, his career, and cancer. Rest in peace indeed. What a gem he was.
(Rent or buy on YouTube).
Damn... I've listened to the soundtracks to Merry Christmas Mr Lawrence and The Last Emperor so many times...sheer genius...
I’ve not watched this. Thanks for the link. One to watch later, such a talent and loss to the world of music. One of my favourite performances of Merry Christmas Mr. Lawrence:
One of the greatest, and greatest losses. Delicate perfection.
That’s sad to hear. He worked with so many other artists, and brought a really distinctive edge to everything he touched.
Always loved YMO when I was a teenager too.
Thanks for the recording. Enjoy Coda, when you have the opportunity. It was well worth the rental fee. I'm left feeling maybe I should have bought it now. There was so much in there, I could watch and listen all over again. It was wonderful to see him recording field recording sounds with his iPhone, and a Shure MV88 (I keep one in a little go everywhere music bag I carry with me when I head out).
As someone who had cancer recently, and is recovering from what I hope to be my first, and last bout of it, he shared his sadness of having cancer, in the film, and his concern as to whether it was a good thing or not that he had given up his music to focus on treatment and healing. I remember this too. It's stirring news for me today, this. I will miss him.
oh no, sad to hear.
That is terrible news, he was a genius, sad day.
His most recent album, 12. Released on 17 January 2023:

On January 17th 2023, his 71st birthday, Ryuichi released ‘12’, his 15th solo album. The new album is a collection of 12 songs selected from musical sketches Sakamoto recorded like a sound diary during his two and a half year battle with cancer.
This last album of Sakamoto's, created from a sound diary of his two and a half years with cancer, makes the perfect epitaph. He has passed in great style. I feel like this last album contains all I need to know about the man, and his music.
Damn... Not so sure what else to say but this one hits deep.
Very sad news… 😞
So early! I'm shocked!
I'm really feeling it. Listening to his last album, 12, right now. It's so beautiful. I just added a little info about the album in my post above yours @Gavinski. He died on my birthday. I've recently been feeling such a strong connection with him, and his last album, a reflection on his two years of cancer, so beautiful, tender, delicate, and quiet.
That's cancer for you.
I always didn't get the term the big ‘C’ until I was in hospital with it. There, even the consultants called it the big ‘C’. Having cancer myself, I learned a great respect for its life changing nature. It seems, from his final album, and the documentary, Coda, Sakamoto did too.
Nooooooooooooooo. Sad to see such an influential artist go 🙏🏼
He has always been a big inspiration of mine. Thank you for the many gifts from your spirit you left with us Mister Sakamoto💗💗

Damn it
Ah that’s sad, so great, but leaves us with music that will live on for a long time yet…
Oh, that's so sad...
...I've always been a YMO fan and Rydeen is one of my all time favorite tracks, ever!
(First time I heard the tune was the loading Daley Thomposons Decathlon from tape on on the C64).
Indeed, and his composition style changed considerably during his life.
Maybe that's somehow related to his health condition?
His early refreshing works were one of my sources of inspiration regarding synthetic sound, while later albums had a much more contemplative touch imo.
I grew up to YMO and loved the solo / Sakamoto x David Sylvian works as well. Such a vital figure - Rest In Peace.
We all discover these people through our own ways -- I was quite excited to walk into Tower Records on Sunset Blvd. in the mid-80s and find the import single of "Filed Work" with Sakamoto and Thomas Dolby. Still have it.
But, of course, now you don't have to drive 30 miles and pay $5, you just have to press "play."
Always loved his work. A beautiful man, a beautiful artist.
what a wonder
Rest In Peace
One of my favorites too!
Also:
Do you know this one @Daveypoo, @Lady_App_titude? 😉
And
gutted. one of my all time fav's.
What a loss! But the master let such an diverse catalog of genre behind !
So true!
