Guitar Time - New iPhone app for your daily guitar practice

Hi! I'm an indie iOS developer and I've recently released an app called Guitar Time. The app helps you manage your daily guitar practice with visualized fretboard exercises and by managing and easily accessing the songs and lessons you're currently practicing.

I saw some of the posts on this forum and felt it could be useful to lots of members, if you're interested check it out here: https://apps.apple.com/app/id1236668475

The basic idea behind the app was - I want to spend 30-60 minutes a day practicing my guitar, but when I actually sit down and practice, it's hard for me to remember which exercises I should be practicing, which songs I'm currently learning and which songs I've already mastered and want to play. I also run into lots of great lessons on YouTube, but then when it's time to practice, I forget about them and don't have one place where I can really organize them.

With the fretboard exercises you can schedule different exercises (scales/chords/modes/triads/inversions) for different days of the week, keep track of your progress and maintain streaks for motivation. You practice alongside a fretboard visualization and a metronome playing the notes.

With songs and lessons, you can add any song, lesson or backing track from YouTube, Apple Music or the Files app into various groups, and then manage which ones you're currently practicing. You can create highlights for specific parts in songs and then loop over those parts, slow them down or speed them up. I also use it to practice songs for my band's gigs - I add the recordings from our rehearsals and select certain parts and solos to focus on.

If the app is successful I can definitely seeing it become a platform where users can share the content they've run into, see what is popular with other users, share practice plans and schedules, create their own exercises and more.

If you try it out please let me know what you think and what I can improve! Thanks!

Yup, that's the pricing for the pro version, but a lot of the app is free forever.

Will give it a go, can you give some detail in the differences between the free and pro please? Personally I don't mind paying for a good app, but I don't want to be paying a subscription, I believe a lot of people here feel the same.

Sure! So for the guitar exercises part, half of the exercises are free, and they tend to be the simpler ones. For the songs/lesson/management part, you're limited to 4 practice items for each group (Songs/Lessons/Solos/Backing Tracks), which means you can add a total of 16 items at a time. The pro version is unlimited and you can also create your own groups. In addition there are some visual features such as different themes and different app icons.

I will probably be adding a one time purchase very soon, I've done that with my other apps and to be honest I just wanted to release an initial version before adding too many features.

    Thanks!

  • Welcome @Greenwell congrats on the release.

  • This looks really handy. I especially like the clean scale diagrams. I personally would not use the practice scheduling part, but I will totally use the song slow-downer, reference stuff, and save videos. 👍

I checked the app (free version) and it is still a bit minimal. Here are some suggestions you can add:

There is a muscle exercise, The Spider, it is the chromatic scale, buy you keep your fingers pressed until a new note is needed. Up and down. And this should be done with a metronome, slow speed at first. In the beginning this is really hard to do, just move one finger and keep the others in position.

The Solo app learns you about intervals, and also if I am right, the name of notes on the fretboard. Both is very handy, to break through the glass ceiling as a beginner, in the beginning you learn all these chords but you have no idea what notes you play.

Learn to play scales, outside of the box, 3 notes on a string, and move down, and slide up. You play the same scale but end up on a different position.

Learn to play licks and notes in relationship with the chords you hear. I have this jazz licks app, Hip Shots Licks for guitar, and that is really great for this kind of practice. Or the Fonexis guitar driller apps.

And an out of the box idea, when I studied piano, I finally understood the way guitar chords are constructed, with flats and sharps, all based on the major scale. Maybe put some theory inside the app.

What also could be very nice, show the most common chord sequences, so you can construct your own chord sequence on the fly, maybe with a simple beat playing. Like the Autochord app. If there is a looper function (maybe the phone mic?), it gets more interesting, you can play licks and solos.

    Great advice 👏

(Though I can’t find that hip shots app in the store…)

Hi! Thanks for checking out the app. I totally agree that it is on the minimal side. My thinking here was to get an initial version out there and see if people connect with the concept. If they do, it's pretty easy to add tons of new exercises and content.

Regarding the Spider exercise, this was actually my thinking with the "Chromatic" exercise. Is the main difference just explaining to the user that they need to move just one finger? Or am I missing something.

Regarding interval training and notes on the fretboard - this is definitely something I would like to add very soon.

Regarding all of your other ideas, they are all great, I will try to add them as I go!

Thanks so much for the detailed feedback, really appreciate it.

ok, thanks! The spider is indeed keep the fingers you press down, at that position, until the finger is needed again. This is really hard to do, other fingers want to move too. You really have to project or "to tunnel" your thoughts on the finger that needs to move. On different positions on the fret board. Don't overdo it because it hurts a little bit. I have learned this from the book Rock Guitar Secrets from Peter Fisher.

I have an other idea, when you want to practice bending, it would help to hear the target tone, to bend in tune. And this could be a half bend, whole, 1,5, two note, with or without the tremolo bar. And to hear variations, release bend, gradual bend, two string bend, hammer-on-bend, etc. All the bends you can imagine.

I don't know if it is in the app already, if you are really serious with practicing, you should keep a notebook. that could be a nice feature, to have a kind of diary inside the app.

Got it! Great ideas. I like the bend idea, that's awesome, will definitely add it.

The notebook idea is cool, how would you it working? Just a general note that you keep adding to? Or various notes like the "Notes" app?

    Thanks!

  • Seems like a nice, easy to see, well laid out app. I deleted it though as playback was glitchy (iPhone 7/iOS15).

    Notes were like |C...DE...F....G....|A....B...CD....E....|etc....,....,....,....|,....,....,....,....|

Thanks for the feedback. I actually have it running on an iPhone 7 with iOS 15 without any issues. If you have a minute and feel like sending a screen recording to [email protected] that would be amazing. Only if you have a spare minute to do it :)

I had to reinstall but the issue wont replicate. I'll screen grab and send if it reoccurs.
